Texas History Day
All students in my PAP Social Studies classes will be required to complete a research project in one of the following categories: historical paper, documentary, performance, website, or exhibit. Students can work on it individually or in a group of up to five. Students can choose their topic as long as it fits within the assigned yearly theme. This year the theme is Conflict and Compromise in History. Class time will be given to work on the project, usually once a week. AMS will have a history fair and choose the top entries in each category. The top entries in each category will move on to represent AMS at the Regional History Day competition at UTA. If a student places in the top two at the regional meet, they will advance on to the state competition in Austin. Last year was our third year to participate in Texas History Day at AMS and we had several students place at the regional meet and two groups advance on to the state meet and win a special award for their entries!
We document the travels and adventures of our students by taking pictures with an army man and posting it to twitter with the hashtag, #roadysarmy, along with their location and activity. I also use the hashtag to document our classroom environment and activities. If a student posts to twitter with the class army man and hashtag will receive extra credit for the six weeks. This is meant to be a fun and exciting way to encourage social studies in our everyday lives!
