South Side Hosts Halloween Night for Community

When Autumn arrives, so do the holidays that everyone looks forward to. At South Side, each student is given the opportunity to join clubs that do good for our school community, and for Halloween, the clubs never fail to disappoint. They hold a Trick or Treating event inside the school every year, open for the public.

Ordinarily, the evening goes a bit longer, but because of the school start and end changes, the Trick Or Treaters begin to roll in around 4-5pm. It goes towards 6 or 7 pm, and there’s a slight amount of clean up after.

The idea of this event is to make an opening environment for the community and its children to celebrate, because not everyone can safely celebrate the holidays at home. Kids dress up, families walk through the halls, and engage with students volunteering in classrooms.

“I feel like we have a lot of fun ideas, and we can help make it more relatable for the kids. We’re also the younger generation,” Terry Sher (10) said.

Students and teachers began decorating the hallways weeks before the special night. There are exhibits of art that kids created, warped pictures in the design of teachers' faces, filled with talent. These were created in years past, and have been reused as spooky décor.

"We took turns giving out candy when each kid came by. My favorite part was seeing the kids be happy when we gave them candy and getting confused, because we had a spinner thing and they didn't know how to spin it, because they're like little. Towards the beginning of October, we were tracing scary killers, and coloring it and cutting it out and putting it up for decoration," Ehler Moo Hta (12) said.

The night of, all clubs stay after and host games in classrooms, alongside giving out candy, and meeting the families roaming the hallways. Philo, Key Club, Student Council, and Peacemakers are big contributors, and have been for years in the past.

“I think this is a good opportunity for little kids to come and enjoy their time. Playing games and earning candy, it’s good for Halloween,” Jo’Lawna Yarbough (10) said.

South Side is doing its part to make everyone feel loved, and seen. Holidays are spent with joy when each child gets to fully celebrate it. Halloween was a success inside the halls of ivy, and the clubs will continue to do this for years to come.
