Food Drive Aims to Help Those in Need

The Food Drive is a charity created by math teacher Lashawnda Martin and others to help grow Mrs. Virginia's food pantry.

“One of the reasons that I decided to create the food drive was because I wanted to help grow Mrs. Virginia's food pantry which is one of the only food pantries that are open and available during winter," Martin said.

Another one of Martin's many reasons for creating the food drive was because She wanted to help with the community and be community leaders, and to be able to give back.

“I wanna be able to teach southside students to be involved with the food drive and other charity work and learn how to be leaders. I want them to learn how to be good leaders not just be one, and to learn to take ownership of helping around with the Food Drive,” Martin said. 

The Can club is what had inspired the food drive to be created, and the can club was here to help the families and students as well as staff benefit from Mrs. Virginia’s food pantry.

“The can club was originally created and was started before the food drive, but it is what inspired me to start the food drive , and was one of my ideas that came to life,” Martin said. 

But every year, the people and staff members of Southside High School do things to help speed up the process of gathering money for food to help grow Mrs. Virginias food pantry a little more, and they do things that will help raise money. 

"Each year they get inputs about new ideas for the Food Drive, and that the Food Drive benefits our school by involving the students in fun things such as "Balloon pop prizes," so that they we have way more fun donating, and doing something fun for a good cause, for instance the food drive,” Martin said.
