On the first day of April 2023, spring break begins for all FWCS students and teachers, but how much of a break is it for the students involved in sports and the coaches?

Baseball, Softball, Girls Tennis, Boys Golf, and, new this year, Boys volleyball are among the sports at South for the 2023 spring season. With scholarships, tourmonets, and sectionals on the line, there is no break from training. Among the teams in the spring season, it seems only the softball and baseball and track teams will still be holding practice over spring break.

“ We have practice on the 5th, 6th, and 8th of April, towards the end of spring break,” Sonia Yoder (11th) said.

Yoder has played softball for South Side for the past 3 years, making first SAC pitcher as a sophomore. Yoder is among the athletes who take their sport seriously and want to better their skill level with as much practice time as possible.

While Softball and Baseball have it multiple times during the week, track is only practicing once. Since softball and baseball are both team sports, it takes more than one person to really practice their skills, unlike track which is an individual sport.

“ I find it beneficial that we are still going to have some practices over the break, and it's not everyday, so it still gives time for people to relax and have time to themselves,” Yoder said.

“ If she knows I'm not going, she might get on me. Even two of my coaches are going on a trip, ” Callah Council (11) said.

While some coaches even are taking a week off from their sports, the student athletes have the responsibility of making it to practice. Other students who aren’t involved in sports, have the freedom of no school.

Even the Football team, who’s season doesn’t start until the summer, will continue to condition over break. They have been meeting in the weight room after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, training with the new coach, Coach Mejia Goodwell.
