On Wednesday, March 8th, South Side High School’s Super Smash E-Sports Varsity team attended a Post-Season Match and successfully won the game. The members Jackson Ball, Anthony Carpenter, Sergio Romeo, Valentino Rosario, and Julian Starks contributed to this win and are advancing to another competition during spring.

“E-Sports is competitive video gaming, so it’s not just playing video games on your own and trying to get different levels of the game, it’s competing against other people, there’s a lot of strategy, much like actual sports,” E-Sports coach Nicholas Adams said.

The E-Sports team started back in 2019-2020 as a video game club, but then officially became an actual team in spring of 2020. Their competitions take place in IHSEN, the Indiana High School E-Sports Network, and they compete six times per semester. They also have playoffs against varsity teams, and they have additional competitions.

“I enjoy the friendliness that we have, and because we share similar interests, it’s easier to communicate. Being in E-sports also gives us college opportunities,” Valentino Rosario (10) said.

Participating in the E-Sports team comes with many positives outside of high school. Students can acquire many scholarships for colleges when participating in E-Sports. Many colleges in Fort Wayne offer degrees for being in this program. Purdue Fort Wayne, Indiana Tech, and University of Saint Francis all offer degrees for E-Sports. These colleges allow students to pursue this pathway even after high school.
