On Wednesday, February 1st, a selected group of South Side students traveled to Memorial Park to participate in the Athletic Mentorship Program between the two schools. This mentorship was from 8:15 am to 8:45 am. This Athletic Mentorship program is put into place by FWCS mentorship coordinator, Ms. Jessica Hanna.

Jessica Hanna is the first mentorship coordinator to work at FWCS. She started in 2021 and has created a handful of mentorship programs along with this one. The purpose of the mentorship is to connect middle school students with their high school peers, in hope to give guidance and create lasting relationships.

“ I think it went super good,” Sonia Yoder (11) said. The South Side leaders handled the situation very well and got the students out of their shells.“ It was fun just talking to kids,” Aiden Hapner (12) said.

South Side students introduced themselves to the 7th and 8th graders, they announced their names and sport they played. A few of the Mentors explained a personality quiz game to the students. They all took the quiz and split up into groups based on their color results: Blue, Gold, Green, or Orange.

“We had a very lovely group and they were very passionate and willing to speak,” Yoder said. Yoder was in the Orange group and led the activity.

"I was kind of scared coming into high school so I would have liked this in middle school,” Hapner said. Overall the first day of the mentorship went well and all the students seemed excited for the next one.

This will be a recurring mentorship, once a month. The Wednesday following, the South Side mentors will be at Kekionga with those middle school athlete students doing the same activities. If you want to get involved, talk with Mr. Torrey Currey, the Athletic director at South Side, about joining next year.
