Developmental Psychology Research

About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica Tomasic. I have a passion for computer science and its applications to psychology. This senior capstone project details my experience working in a psychology lab. The website will summarize the projects I contributed to over a 5-month period in a timeline format. The menu at the top of the page will lead you through the projects.

Professor Erik Thiessen's Lab at Carnegie Mellon University

Starting on July 1st, 2022, I worked as a research assistant in Professor Erik Thiessen's lab at CMU. Most of my work was based on data analysis and data transformation. There is a break in the timeline when I became ill with covid. For my Capstone, my mentor was Professor Erik Thiessen, and my supervisor was Mr. Matuni (US Computer Science).

What is Developmental Psychology?

Developmental psychology studies how humans grow and adapt through time. For a long time, the field was focused mostly on infants and children, but it has expanded to include studies on adult development and aging. A common example of developmental psychology is the debate on nature versus nurture. That is, whether children's personality and behavioral development are based on their genetics from birth, or if they develop based on their environment and parenting.

In research, we also might expand outside the realm of developmental psychology in order to create a tool that assists in answering other questions (see: What Defines a Story?)

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Program

July 4 – July 8

Course certification is required to conduct legal research on human subjects and access the data from human experiments. I took two courses, each taking about 3 hours. My certification allows me to view data from experiments conducted at Carnegie Mellon University, and to conduct research at the institution. It was essential for me to earn these certificates before starting my research. The certification, however, did not allow me to work with children because I am a minor, and so most of my work was in data analysis.

Social & Behavioral Research

This course detailed the requirements behind establishing informed consent, risk, and confidentiality. For example, the data in this website will not contain any identifying information on the participants, such as name or demographics. It also taught federal regulations surrounding experimentation on prisoners, children, and within schools.

Responsible Conduct of Research

This course details standard research procedure, data management, and research misconduct. The course explains fabrication, falsification, and plagarism in the scope of research, as well as the consequences of doing so with federal funding. In addition, it outlines mentorship, authorship, and peer review.
