Dear Students and Parents
Welcome back to school! I hope that everyone had a great summer. It is the beginning of a challenging year at Walters Junior High School. I am looking forward to working with you and your child throughout the year. I believe that a strong partnership between home and school is necessary to ensure that your child has a fun and successful year. Please read through the list of classroom policies and expectations.
I. Student Organization
Your child’s success as a student will improve if your child is organized. One of our class goals is to promote organization as part of the daily classroom routine. Students will need to bring both a three ring binder with paper and a spiral bound notebook (journal) to take notes. A composition book is fine. Students are required to bring their workbook to class every day. Class notes will be graded periodically and must be kept neatly. Students will also need pencils, erasers and blue or black pens. Work written in other colors will be returned, ungraded to be recopied.
Please check your student’s agenda periodically to ensure it is being filled in.
II. Grading Policy
Your child’s quarter and semester grades will be based on the following:
Tests and Projects-60%
Classwork, homework, and labs-40%
Tests and Quizzes will be given periodically to assess students’ comprehension and understanding of material covered in class. If a student is absent on the day of a test, the student is responsible for arranging to make up the test.
Projects-We will have at least two projects this year. We have new curriculum and the subject matter has changed, so some of my projects are no longer applicable. As a result, I will be dropping the lowest test score to make up for not having projects. If I come up with more projects as the year goes on, I will still drop your lowest Test/Project grade.
Classwork/Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, usually Monday through Thursday, but occasionally on the weekends. Students will be expected to complete both reading and written assignments at home. Homework is an essential part of learning and must be completed. Late assignments will be accepted for excused absences. Makeup work must be completed and done well. If absent, it is the STUDENT’S responsibility to obtain and make up classwork and homework. The assignments are written on the homework board located in class, and also can be found on the agenda in Google Classroom.
Cheating will not be tolerated. Only permitted items will be allowed on the desk for test taking. If caught cheating, the student will receive a 0 mark for the test and an office referral. ANY COMMUNICATION WITH ANY STUDENT DURING A TEST IS CHEATING! ANY CELL PHONE USE IS CHEATING. CELL PHONES MUST BE OFF AND PUT AWAY DURING TESTS.
III. Classroom Discipline Plan
I expect all of my students to behave appropriately in class. Any behavior that interrupts my ability to teach and other students’ ability to learn is not appropriate behavior. All students are expected to observe the following classroom rules
Be prompt. Students are to be seated and ready to work when the tardy bell rings.
Be prepared. All necessary materials are to be in class and restroom breaks taken care of before class.
Be respectful of others. This includes respecting other people’s property, opinions and personal space.
Be courteous. Do not speak out of turn. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat. Think before you act. (We will practice the procedures!)
Be on task. Remain on task throughout the period. Do not leave until the teacher has dismissed the class. Push your seat in when you leave.
As with any discipline plan, there are consequences for inappropriate behavior.
Consequences:
-Warning.
-Rule reminder sentence writing
-Visit to the Responsibility Center (RC).
-Phone call, email, or written notice to parents.
-Conference with teacher.
-Detention at lunch or after school.
Referral to the Vice Principal
IV. Textbook Policy
The textbook and workbook must be cared for. There are no replacement workbooks. If the student leaves Walters before the end of the school year, both books must be returned in good condition.
V. Daily Routines and Procedures: Think before you act.
Students should know the following routines and procedures:
-Students are to enter the classroom everyday prepared. This means that they should have materials in class and homework done. If you are consistently unprepared, your parents will receive a phone call.
-Students should follow the agenda on the board.
-When the tardy bell rings, students shall be seated, quietly and working on the opener.
-One free restroom pass per quarter. IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE SICK, GO TAKE CARE OF IT.
-All papers require a heading, along with a title. Name, Date, and Period. Get in the habit of doing this when you start a paper!
VI. General Classroom Expected Behavior
In order to keep the classroom running, in order, and neat, the following procedures will be observed in general:
-Graffiti Check: Your seating area is your responsibility. If there is writing or garbage dumped in your area you will be blamed for it. It is your responsibility to report any mess you see at the beginning of the period.
-Backpack Space: During labs we move around the classroom. Backpacks should be placed on the shelf next to your seat. Do not leave them on the floor or on the lab bench.
-Eating/Drinking: Room 35 is a science lab room. Eating or drinking is not allowed. If you have health concerns we will make arrangements to ensure you are taken care of.
-Trash and Garbage go into the trash can. They do not go onto the floor, in the sink, or on the gas jets! If we are taking notes, please do not get up at random to discard your refuse. Please raise your hand, wait to be called on, and ask for permission. When given permission, move toward the nearest can and discard. Think before you act!
-Pencil Sharpening: Please raise your hand and wait for permission if we are working on notes. Do not automatically get up and wander the classroom. That is distracting. Think before you act.
-Closing Procedures: At the end of the period, the clock doesn’t tell you to pack up. Mr. Kuhlmann does. The bell doesn’t dismiss you. Mr. Kuhlmann does. When dismissed, your area should be clean, and your seat should be pushed under the lab bench.
THINK BEFORE YOU ACT.
VII. Parent Contact
Please feel free to call me any time during the semester if you have any questions or concerns about your child. I am available after school by appointment for conferences.
Again, I look forward to working closely with you to ensure the success of your child!
Sincerely,
Randall Kuhlmann
