This is my third year here at Horner, and I am so excited to be back in person. I started teaching with a credential in 2016, and have taught sixth grade English and history core since starting here. Beforehand I taught preschool for two years in Japan. Prior to that, I taught grade 1 and then 4/5/6 combo in Oakland, as well as a part time teaching job with Santa Clara Unified School District shortly before leaving for Japan. It has been a long journey to joining Fremont Unified, and I am thrilled to now be part of the Horner team. I truly love teaching middle school as the students are old enough to be responsible and independent, but young enough to still be excited and involved. It is such a fun and interactive age level to work with, and I am so excited to get to know all of you this school year!

I didn't start out my career with teaching in mind; I graduated with my degree in business administration from St. Mary’s College, and though I was looking for a more traditional office job, that summer I decided to think about what I needed to do by working a familiar job I've done since high school: teaching kids swimming. I realized I wanted to teach in that time, and started searching for programs to get my credential. I earned my masters in Education: Curriculum and Instruction as well as my Multiple Subject Credential at San Jose State, and started subbing around the south bay before I started my full- time teaching career.

I currently live in San Mateo, though I grew up in San Jose and have family in Fremont, too. I adore my cat, Mikasa, and also have 23 plants that I take care of at home. I enjoy travelling across the bay, whether it be for work or social events, because I see how big our area is, yet how connected we all are, too. I really enjoy seeing all the birds in the early morning, and how beautiful the sun looks as it comes over the hills in the east. I hope to bring a bit of myself and my passions into the classroom, so students feel safe to do the same.

Please feel free to contact me throughout the year with any questions, concerns, or thoughts. I truly believe that a strong partnership between home and the classroom helps to best support each child, so I look forward to getting to know both my students and families this year.

 SBAC testing 2024

April 29 - May 17

Block schedule will take place on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday during testing window. Wednesday will be regular minimum day schedule.

Attendance

ATTENDANCE:  Students are expected to attend school everyday.  The FUSD goal for attendance is 95% or higher.  If for some reason a student is absent, their parents must call the office explaining why they are out of school.  Parents should be specific about the  child’s symptoms when calling into the school so that we can code the absence appropriately and take necessary action to ensure everyone’s safety.  California law requires regular attendance at school.  If you are not in school regularly, there could be disciplinary actions that could result from you not attending school.

ABSENCES - UNEXCUSED

Unexcused absences are those absences that are not verified by a parent/guardian and that do not meet the California codes for excused absences.  Those codes are available in the parent handbook.  Unexcused absences may result in disciplinary consequences or a referral to SARB.

ABSENCES - TRUANCY:  Any student who is absent from school without a valid excuse for three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, is a truant (Education Code 48260).  After a student has been declared truant, any subsequent absences or tardiness that are unexcused will also be declared truancies.  Students with excessive truancies will be reported to the district’s office of Student Support Services, and the parent will be contacted.  Unresolved truancies may result in the student and parent/guardian being referred to the FUSD Student Attendance Review Board (SARB). This may also lead to a hearing held at the Fremont Police Station.

TARDINESS:  Students arriving late to school after the tardy bell for period 1, should go directly to the office for a pass to class.   All students are required to get a pass from the office to enter period 1 after the tardy bell rings.  Students have  passing time  from one class to the next.  Students who are not in their classrooms by the tardy bell , will be marked tardy by the teacher.  Any student who arrives to period 2-6 more than 5 minutes late, will be sent to the office for a pass to explain why they were tardy to class.  Students will then be admitted into their class with a late pass from the office.   Students with excessive tardies will receive after school detentions.
