Fremont Unified School District Transitional Kindergarten Program
Welcome, Fremont families, to the wonderful world of Transitional Kindergarten!
What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Transitional Kindergarten, or TK, is a relatively new grade included in public K-12 education across California. As the first in a two-year Kindergarten program, it provides our youngest learners with high-quality, developmentally appropriate learning experiences with credentialed teachers for free.

Benefits of TK
Transitional Kindergarten is:
A head start for your child
Research indicates that beginning Kindergarten at an older age improves children's social and academic development and boosts children's test scores in math, reading, and general knowledge.
Students who begin school at a later age are also less likely to be retained or misdiagnosed with a learning disability.
A positive change for families and schools
Transitional Kindergarten gives parents an additional option to ensure their children enter kindergarten with the maturity and skills they need to excel.
Schools are able to do more with what they have because Transitional Kindergarten helps ensure children enter Kindergarten ready to learn.
A winning solution for all
Transitional kindergarten gives teachers an unparalleled opportunity to ensure our youngest students are prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.
California's new cutoff of September 2 for Kindergarten entry now matches the rest of the nation. Transitional Kindergarten provides California families with an additional way to support their child's development.
Transitional Kindergarten ultimately saves California money because children are better prepared for success in school and less likely to be placed in special education or retained in later grades.
