Daily Routine
Plan a Daily Routine (5-10 minutes) with Math.
Early Years? Calendar Time, Circle Time or Number of the Day.
Middle Years? Number of the Day or any Math Stretches are always good.
Senior Years? Mental Math (ask me about it).
Web-Based Learning
Use the web. Does your school have a subscription to IXL? Create your class and get started. If this interests you, talk to your Principal about getting a site license.
We have a site licence for MathStreet for all schools in Area 1. Contact me if you are interested in using this site and I'll give you more information.
Games for Practice
Games. Games. Games. Games. The best way for students to practice their math is to use their skills. Sure there are books you can buy books with Math Games for Independent Practice, but make sure you use the online resources that are available for you to use.
Check out Early Years Games and Middle Years Games on Manitoba Education.
Also, see the activities on NCTM Illuminations.
You can always Email Me to send you some digital resources.
Also, use the web for games too, I like SumDog and HoodaMath. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Try both.
Number Talks
The biggest challenge you may face is a lower reading ability of your students. For this reason, I highly recommend including Number Talks in your instruction.
Check out this page on Pinterest, to see how teachers have used Number Talks in their classrooms.

Classroom Design
Design your classroom to meet the needs of your students, be prepared to differentiate and modify and adapt and deal with problems you may never have encountered.
Classroom Library
Fill your classroom library with books, magazines, e readers, leveled books, picture books, poetry books, listening centres, ear buds, audio books, online readers, etc. Reading is the root of all learning. All students enjoy stories, whether listening to them, reading them, or viewing them. Your daunting task is to reach all of your young minds; not just a few but every one of them – no pressure! Your classroom should have around 1500 books!
