Frye Island Golf Course Open to Public!
Set in the middle of Frye Island, located in Sebago Lake, Maine, the Golf Course is 25 minutes west of Portland and just a ten minute Ferry Ride away. The Ferry handles nine cars and departs every 20-30 minutes - no reservations are required.
Just one stop on the Maine Golf Trail, this hidden gem was designed by the infamous Geoffrey Cornish. Although a nine hole course, it is not your typical Island Resort Course as there are plenty of challenges for all levels of play. There are two sets of tees Gold and Silver allowing for eighteen holes with extended yardage as well as Blue tees (for seniors or juniors) and Red tees (for Women). For a person wanting to play eighteen holes, the normal plan would be to play the Gold tees for the first nine and the Silver tees the second nine.
Although the Course is designed to accommodate all levels of play, there are many chances for a golf shot to get into trouble. There's the Cornish 'signature' double green on #2 and #6. While #6 is rated the easiest, you'll find three ponds, a stream and woods on either side that may cause some difficulties. Water is also found on holes #2, #3, #5, and #8; however, there are landing areas for those who opt to play safer. Tight fairways will also reward players who shoot down the middle, while challenging players who don't. Overshooting the greens will also present difficulties.
Many players have stated that Frye Island has "the best greens in Maine" despite difficult growing conditions. Non-members have also indicated they look forward to coming back to Frye Island Golf Course time and time again.
