Individual and Small Group Guidance with Ms. Avers!

Individual Guidance

If a student is having emotional or social challenges that are keeping them from remaining in the classroom, I may visit with that student as a support service to the educational environment.  In FISD, school counselors do not work with students one-on-one in a therapy/clinical role.  If parents would like more in-depth counseling or therapy, FISD will provide a list of resources once parents have signed a release form.  This list is a courtesy furnished to parents and staff of persons and agencies believed to provide services.  Liscano does not endorse or recommend any counselor(s) and we are not authorized to make such recommendations.  Please contact me to obtain the most recent resource list from FISD.

Student referrals may come from the classroom teacher, principal, assistant principal, parent, etc.  Often it is the student who elects to come to visit with me.  My goal is to help that student cope with the current situation, so they will be able to be successful in the classroom.

 Small Group Guidance

Small groups meet once per week for approximately 20-30 minutes for 6-8 meetings.  There are usually no more than 6 students in each group. There are many reasons why children are included in a group.  Some children have been suggested for a group by a teacher, counselor, or parent.  Other children may ask to be in a group.  Some children would like to be in a group to help others in a similar situation.  It can be so comforting for a child to see that other children their age have had similar experiences and he or she is not alone.  Also, students can benefit from the reassurance they gain from being able to help others in similar circumstances.

A few group topics might include:

1. Changing Families: For students experiencing a recent separation, divorce, or remarriage in their immediate family.

2. My Friends & Me: Students will learn more about relationships with peers and adults.

3. Stars: Self-Understanding and Confidence

4. Understanding Stress: Students will learn more about the causes and symptoms of stress.

5. Dealing with Feelings: Students will learn more about anger and other feelings.

Small guidance groups are ongoing from October to May.  If you feel your child would benefit from small group guidance or benefit from speaking with me in an individual setting, please complete and submit the Counseling Referral Form below.

I am excited to begin working with your children.  Thank you in advance for sharing your most precious gift with me.
