Contest Rules

Teams: Up to 3 students per team


  • Beginner (Students who have no more than 2 months of programming experience, including self-taught experience.)
  • Novice (Students who have not yet completed the AP Computer Science course.)
  • Advanced (Open to any students.)

Equipment: Teams must each bring their own computer. One computer (one keyboard, one monitor) per team. Computer should have WiFi capability and configuration access.

Format: 2-hour hands-on. 3 separate problem sets geared to each division. No written test. Submissions are through a web-based judging system over a wireless LAN. Students may use the Java API and bring one reference book. Students may bring notes. Access to the web to find solutions is prohibited.

Scoring: Win by solving the most problems. Ties are broken by penalty points. Penalty points are given for each minute from the start of the contest. Twenty additional points will be added for each wrong submission of the problem, if it is ultimately solved.

Registration Information

Cost: $20/team. Cash and checks accepted. Please make checks payable to "Heritage High School" and indicate that it is for the FirstByte programming contest. Checks can be brought in person or mailed to:
