The promises of God are scattered throughout Scripture and are as varied as the individual needs of all the Lord's people. As we understand their importance, we are eager to begin a lifelong pursuit of their study and to the commitment of memorizing them.
The promises of God are graciously given to the child of God to help strengthen their faith in difficult times. I believe their primary function is to provide inner power and strength to the believer as they face the extremities of life. Through the promises, our God 's unfailing love and mercy are given to us as He ministers to us through His Word.
During times of adversity and pressure, when the dark, swirling waters of the storm come, when the tempest fury comes against us, we have the promises of God as an anchor in the soul. They assure us that we are safe under His outstretched wings. We can have pressure on the outside, yet find peace on the inside.
Always ready to respond to our exercise of faith in Him. His promises provide something to which our faith can cling. They assure us of what God will do when we depend on Him. The result is an inner calm amid the storm. If we are to benefit from this ministry, we must use the promises of God.
The promises of God are His resources for us in times of adversity. For every kind of problem you might face in life, God has a corresponding promise. Think of the promises as divine guarantees. In fact, we know they are important for Peter singled them out as being able to help us become more like God:
2 Peter 1:4
by which have been given to us EXCEEDINGLY GREAT AND PRECIOUS PROMISES, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature.
God wants us to have peace on the inside, not pressure. Adversity brings pressure. Promises bring peace. Our Heavenly Father knows what we need. So He gives us something that our faith can hold on to, cling to, and carry with us moment by moment - the promises.
The next time you face a problem, look up a promise. The promises help us think. They bring God into the picture. This focused thinking, with God in the picture, brings peace of mind and heart. Certainly when we lay hold of the promise that "all things are working together for good," fear is brought under control. We have God's guarantee that something good is going to happen. You can genuinely relax, trust God and move on with your life. In each promise, you should find comfort, rest, and peace in its truth. But How do we use them? It is pretty simple really!
STEP 1: Look up the promises of God
The promises in this article are topically arranged. Look through the directory and locate a promise that corresponds to your need. If you are worried about something, then look at the promises listed in the section "When I lack peace of mind." Then take the next step.
Step 2: Learn the promises of God
After we define our need and find an appropriate promise, we must memorize and meditate on them. The promises of God do not benefit us if they are locked up in Scripture. We must lock them up in our hearts and minds. You cannot apply to your circumstances what you do not know exists. Some people say that "what you don't know won't hurt you." This is untrue in the Christian way of life. Ignorance cuts us off from God's resources and blessing. WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW DOES HURT YOU!
Step 3: Lean on the promises of God
William Barclay writes:
“A word, however great and noble and precious, is of no avail unless it becomes integrated into the person who hears it by faith. There are many different kinds of hearing in this world. There is indifferent hearing; there is disinterested hearing; there is cynical hearing and mocking hearing. The hearing that matters is the hearing that listens eagerly, and then acts. The promises of God are not merely beautiful pieces of literature; they are not merely sweet saying which mean nothing; they are promises on which a man is meant to stake his life and by which he is meant to dominate his action.” (William Barclay, Hebrews, page 33.)
Problems don't go away immediately, so each time your fear or worry or anger returns, recall the promise you memorized. Think about its implications and the God who pledges it. Wait on the Lord to bring what He promises to pass. We are not good long distant runners. We live in fast food, instant, ready-mix society. We hate to wait for anything, and when we are confronted with lines and slowdowns, we want to scream. We must learn to wait on the Lord. Isaiah says that our experience should be this:
He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increases strength. Isaiah 40:20.
This is a great promise. God helps the helpless. The faint are those who recognize their helplessness. He gives them power or strength. If He does not remove the problem immediately, then as we wait on the Lord, there will be the strength to endure it. God sustains us while the problem exists. We give the problem to the Lord, and the Lord gives us His strength. While we wait on the Lord for deliverance we rest in His promises:
But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
Some have reversed this verse. They fight the problem while the Lord waits. He waits to bless them, but He can't get their attention. They are too busy delivering themselves. Every day that the problem exists you pray and hold on to that promise. You continue to walk by faith. You continue to trust the Lord and depend upon Him. Before you start to read through the next section on the greatest promise ever given to us.
THE GREATEST PROMISE EVER GIVEN TO US!
If you have never personally accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, then the issue is not mixing your faith with the promises of God, it is believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. We want you to know that Jesus died on the cross for your sins and He took your place on the cross as your substitute.
He was your sin-bearer:
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:3
He was your substitute:
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
God's blessing in your life begins the moment you acknowledge your indebtedness to Jesus Christ. When you pray "Father, I believe Jesus died on the cross for my sins and took my place on that cross, and I trust Him as my Savior." Then, and only then does God save us. Faith alone in Christ alone!
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16
This is a promise to you if you will trust in Jesus Christ today, then you will have eternal life and spend eternity with God.
Romans 10:13 For “Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”
