Topic 8 - Solving Quadratic Equations

(Starting Wednesday, April 24)

Topic 8 focuses on extending knowledge of quadratic functions. Students learn to solve quadratic equations using tables, graphs, and factoring. Students also solve quadratic equations using square roots, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. Students learn different methods such as graphing, elimination, and substitution for solving linear equation systems.

Topic 7 - Quadratic Functions

(starting Friday, March 1, 2019)

This unit focuses on extending students' previous understanding of functions to include quadratic functions: graphing them, using them to model real world situations, and comparing them to linear and exponential functions.

  • Modeling with Quadratic Functions
  • Comparing Linear, Exponential, and Quadratic Functions

Topic 6 - Polynomials and Factoring

(starting Friday, January 25, 2019)

This unit focuses on extending polynomials. Students will identify the parts and factors of polynomials. They will understand how to factor trinomials using the greatest common factor, binomial factors, and special patterns. They will learn how to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.

Topic 5 - Exponents and Exponential Functions

(Starting January 7, 2019)

This unit focuses on extending knowledge of functions to include the exponential function. Students will learn to write, graph, and transform exponential functions. Students will also use exponential functions to model real-world situations and to make predictions.

Topic 4 - Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities

(Starting November 26)

For our final topic of the calendar year we are going to explore systems of linear equations and inequalities and see how they can be used to model situations and solve problems. Students will learn methods to solve systems and will be able to identify when each solution method is most useful.

Mini-Unit - SSAT Exponents and Properties of Geometry

(Starting Wednesday, November 14)

Over the next two weeks we're going to take some classes to look at a topic that is covered later in the school year in more depth, but is likely to appear on the SSAT test in December. This week we'll be looking at properties of exponents and different rules for simplifying exponential expressions. Next week, because of Thanksgiving, we have only one class so we'll look at various properties of geometry and geometric equations with which the students should be familiar for the SSAT

Topic 3 - Linear Functions

(Starting, Monday, October 22)
