History is a fascinating subject; it will make you question the world around you and encourage you to develop a deeper understanding of why certain people act as they do. When you start to study History in Y7 at Outwood Academy Freeston you will have a one hour lesson a week, then when you move into Y8, this increases to two hours a week.
What is History?
History means, in its simplest form: the past. However, it is also about what historians have actually written about the past. It provides us with a way to make sense of current affairs.
What skills will the study of History teach you?
You are a citizen in this world and you need to know about the various consequences of the decisions taken by the people of the past, to provide you with a broad cultural awareness. It will teach you to:
Analyse issues and events
Express your ideas both orally and in written form
Put forward ideas and arguments in a concise manner
Gather, investigate and assess materials
Base conclusions on research and generate further ideas
Organise material in a logical and coherent way
Be independent
Pose questions and seek answers – A love of enquiry!
Hi everyone. My name is Mrs Stockton, I am one of the History teachers here at Outwood Academy Freeston and I am a proud member of the Humanities team. Like my colleagues, I am passionate about the subject I teach. I really do believe that we can learn so much about human nature from studying the behaviour of our predecessors. When I was an A-Level student studying History, this quote was displayed on the my classroom wall and it is something that has always stuck with me – “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.’ (George Santayana). This is why I love teaching History; the past is the key to unlocking our future.
I don’t have one favourite topic to teach; honestly, it is all interesting. However, I really enjoy teaching more modern topics where the legacy of the past is easily seen in the present. I also love delving into the private lives of the great, the good and the bad from the past. Queen Elizabeth I is a hero of mine; she ruled on her own terms in what was a man’s world. She was a real feminist before the term was even used! I can’t wait to welcome your child into my lessons – my only aim is to engage them in the study of a subject that is so fascinating.
Hello! My name is Miss Higson and I am head of Humanities at Outwood Academy Freeston and my specialism is History. I LOVE History, and am sure you love it too! There is nothing more intriguing than investigating the past, the good bits, the bad bits and the down right gruesome bits! I love all History, though I particularly enjoy studying revolutions throughout History, such as the Jacobite Uprising and the French and Russian Revolution. I guess I just like a rebel! We study lots of exciting and interesting topics here at Freeston. Here are some of the questions we will be investigating in year 11, you can start to have a think or do some research:
-Why Was 1066 The Last Time England Was Successfully Invaded?
- Was Medieval Life Really Nasty, Brutish and Short?
- Who Were the Aztecs?
- Who Were The Tudors and Why Were They So Infamous?
- Were The Stuarts Successful Monarchs?
- Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans: Who Were The Healthiest?
We set homework on a weekly basis and this is through Google Classroom and our Humanities website. Lessons are also now loaded onto Google Classroom, so you never need to feel behind!
Hi my name is Miss McDonnell. I am a History teacher here at Freeston. I have a passion for 20th century history, and in particular the political movements that took place during this time, such as the Women's Campaign for Votes and the Civil Rights Movement. I think it is really important that we learn about how people had to fight to gain equal rights, as everyone should be treated the same. I am fascinated by History and what we can learn from it, but also how it helps us to understand the world we live in today. I hope to share my enthusiasm for history with you all when you join in September.
