Third Grade


Singing

  • Students will sing songs in varying tonalities and meters.
  • Students will sing songs from other cultures and varied genres.
  • Students will sing in groups as well as independently.


Playing Instruments

  • Students will continue to develop motor skills and coordination will be through the use of music props specifically designed to aid in instrument readiness.
  • Students will play both Un-pitched and Pitched Percussion Instruments including African Drums, xylophones, bells, and shakers.
  • Students will begin lessons on the recorder mid-year.


Reading and Notation

  • Students will continue symbolic association of rhythm writing and reading.
  • Students will participate in rhythm dictation.
  • Students will begin to read pitches in the treble clef as well as simple melodic lines.


Improvisation and Composition

  • Students will explore improvising and creating both tonal and rhythm responses.
  • Student will begin formal composition of rhythm patterns and short melodies.


Critical Response

  • Students will begin to respond to music by describing how music makes them feel and explore what elements contribute to that.
  • Students will explore expressive elements of music like dynamics and tempo.
