Panther Learning 2020

March 31 - Message from Mrs. Talley

March 31, 2020

Dear Ferrum Families:

Due to the Governor’s stay at home order, we will be making changes to our office hours at Ferrum Elementary.

The office staff will begin working from home with very minimal time in the building. If you need assistance from the office, please email Mrs. Talley at or Mrs. Hambrick at We will respond to email messages or pass your message along to another staff member that can assist you. If you call the school, please leave a message and we will receive these messages and return your call.

Please remember that your child’s teacher will be in communication with you on a regular basis as they are responsible for delivering remote instruction. If you have instructional questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Staff members will be on hand this Thursday to distribute learning packets only if you do not have internet access. We will maintain appropriate social distancing and appreciate you following the same protocol as you stop by to pick up these materials.

As Dr. Church stated in his letter earlier today, food delivery will cease after Thursday. We will still distribute food on Monday’s and Thursday’s from 11:00 – 1:00. Again, we ask that you maintain appropriate social distancing when picking up food.

I am so thankful for such a supportive group of parents at Ferrum Elementary. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear Ferrum Families,

First of all, let me begin by saying how sad I am that our students are not here for the last quarter of the 2019-2020 school year. The hallways are quiet and the days are just not as fun without our students. I would like to give a huge shout-out to all of you for the adjustments you have made to keep our students safe and continuing to learn while at home. I understand how stressful things are for everyone right now. Adding the element of home learning is just a piece of the puzzle. I greatly appreciate your hard-work and dedication as well as your support of Ferrum Elementary staff.

You should have received a letter from Dr. Church yesterday outlining some very important information as we move forward. Please read his letter carefully and certainly let us know if you need clarification.

Up to this point, instruction provided by your child’s teacher has been review of material previously taught. Beginning April 14th, this will change. New skills will be covered and students must complete the work successfully in order to be prepared for the next grade level. Teachers are required by the Virginia Department of Education to verify completion of the work. Please work with your child’s teacher to determine how this will look for your child. Students who do not complete the assigned work and participate in the virtual learning process by May 20, 2020 will attend a summer session.

If you need a strong internet signal, you may work from the parking lot of Ferrum Elementary if this will assist you in accessing virtual learning materials. For those of you without any form of internet will be supplied with project based learning materials that will be available for pick-up on Thursday, April 2nd from 8:00 – 12:30. Teachers must still reach out to you and speak to your child to provide instruction if you can’t access via the internet. Learning packets will not be supplied for students with internet access.

On a different note, schools will continue to offer meals. However, the schedule will change on Monday, March 30th. Meals will only be available for pick-up/delivery on Mondays and Thursdays (still from 11:00 – 12:30). On these days, enough food will be given to last through the week.

We are in the process of determining how we can get your child’s class belonging back to you. Please be patient as we figure out the safest way for this to occur.

Your child’s teacher has worked very hard to adjust their new way of teaching. They also join me in letting you know that we all miss your precious children. Please take this time of socially distancing yourselves to spend some quality family time together. While school-work is important, it is also important that you support your children, encourage them, play with them, and allow them time to adjust to this new routine.

While our workday looks different at this time, we are available so please reach out if you need us.

Stay safe and healthy and remember the only way to contain the spread of this virus is to stop providing opportunities for the virus to spread. Social distancing is key!
