Lots to Celebrate as FPIS Springs Towards the End of Term!
Wow! What a brilliantly busy Spring Term we have had here at FPIS! It has been wonderful to see how much the children have enjoyed their projects this term and how well they have progressed. Their enthusiasm and love for learning is a joy to see!
On that note, our Year 1 and 2 Marketplace events this week provided an incredible showcase and celebration of the children's achievements this term. We are so proud of how passionately they were able to share the things they have been learning about with all those who came along. It was lovely to see so many parents, family members and friends join us. What an excellent ending!
Thank you to all those who attended our recent Parent's Meetings. We hope you found them informative and helpful. We always value the opportunity to meet with our parents to share progress, achievements and next steps in their child's learning journey. Thank you for your continued support.
Following our very successful workshops with Emma Sweeting, as part of our Trunks Across the Thames art project, our baby elephant (yet to be named...) will be having a few finishing touches over the holidays. It will be joining us in school at the very start of next term before heading off to join the rest of the herd in preparation for the art trail in the summer. We can't wait to see it!
With plants and animals all around gradually emerging from the depths of winter and the days getting longer, it really does feel as if spring has arrived at last. Hopefully, the weather will continue to be kind over the school holidays! If you are celebrating, we hope you have a very Happy Easter and we very much hope that everyone enjoys the break.
We look forward to welcoming our children and families back to school for the Summer Term on Monday 13th April.
With very best wishes
Jane Indge

SAM - our School Attendance Mascot, is our FPIS teddy bear who helps our children think about why it is so important to attend school every day.
Our children are busy learning right from the start of the day, so being in class on time each morning matters just as much too. Registration begins at 8:45am and we expect all children to be in class by 9:00am.
Each week, during our Celebration Assembly, the attendance figures are shared. The class with the best attendance overall gets to look after SAM until the following week. SAM will be spending his Spring holiday in Holly Class who had an attendance figure of 95.0%! Well done!

Jump Start Jonny gave us all an experience to remember this week when he bought his football themed JSJ 2026 Tour to our school. It was incredible for our children to interact and join in with JSJ in real life (rather than him being on our screens in class as he is on an ordinary school day!)
All of the children - and staff, were in awe as JSJ jumped, leapt and WHOOPA-ED his way through his action-packed and very funny routines. The whole school was literally buzzing with energy and full of smiles and laughter. What made the tour even more special was that Jumpstart Jonny came to visit everyone in each of their classes too. What an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G day!
Thank you and well done also to Mrs Wytchard, Miss Midaoui, Miss Aggarwal, Mrs Indge, Mr Thompson, Miss Dexter and Miss Mahoney for participating so enthusiastically in a VERY silly JSJ challenge too! The children all found it hilarious! :)
We had a busy and exciting time celebrating World Book Day in school on Friday 6th March. Our children (and grown ups!) looked fantastic in their outfits and to launch our day of celebrations, everyone enjoyed our WBD Costume Parade in the school hall.
Our Year 2 children visited Year 3 at FPJS where they had a great time listening to stories and sharing their favourite books.
We were also very pleased to welcome some of our FPJS Year 6 children to Early Years too. The older children bought books to share with our little ones, which everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy! This session was the first of what will be regular weekly visits to Early Years by our Year 6 children, which we are all very excited about!
In Year 1, each class had a special visit from Mrs Indge, Mr Thompson and Mr Wallace, who each bought along one of their favourite books to share with the children.
We were all a little redder and a bit sillier than usual on Red Nose Day - all in aid of Comic Relief, of course.
Thank you to our School Council for organising our Red Nose sales once again this year. We sold 225 noses in total, which is fantastic!
In total our FPPF JustGiving fundraising page has raised an impressive £468. Thank you to everyone for your support!
Beth came to visit us to talk to us about Easter! It was lovely hearing her talk about this important celebration, exploring its traditions and helping us understand why it is a significant time of year for many people. We had lots of fun discussing different Easter traditions around the world and sharing how we might try to spread kindess.
We thoroughly enjoyed our workshops with Emma Sweeting to help decorate our baby elephant for Trunks Across The Thames! We all had the opportunity to paint some of the design onto the elephant as well as enjoy some other fun elephant themed art and craft activities! We can't wait to spot our elephant on a family-friendly trail across Slough and Windsor this Summer.
On Monday 9th March Author Sean Perkins visited our school to read from his latest release, Oscar and Ben – The Sleepover. This is the third book in the popular Oscar and Ben series. We had so much fun listening to his story, he even added special sound effects! We then enjoyed a sing a long whilst Sean played his guitar. We practised our rhyming skills and had lots of fun! Thank you Sean for sharing one of your wonderful stories with us!
Active 60 Festival
On February 26th, Silver Birch Class enjoyed an exciting and action-packed day at the Active 60 Festival, held at Braywick Leisure Centre. It involved nine schools across Maidenhead and the children took on Disney and Dreamworks inspired physical challenges. The event encouraged the children to stay active, have fun, and try a variety of sports. From cycling and football to archery and den building, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
The class rotated through each activity station, giving their all and supporting one another every step of the way. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and effort as they developed new skills. It was a fantastic experience, and the children had a truly enjoyable day.
Early Years
Our Early Years children have been engaged in a variety of exciting learning experiences over the past few weeks! The children have been learning about Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese Artist famous for her use of polka dots. Inspired by her artwork, they created their own masterpieces using cotton buds, bottle lids, finger prints and other circular objects found in the classroom. After discussing how famous artists sign their work, they proudly added their own signatures to their creations.
We were incredibly grateful to Mrs Bi, who went above and beyond to teach the children about Ramadan and Eid. She shared stories, photographs and answered the children’s thoughtful and respectful questions. She also brought in different prayer mats and explained their significance and how they are used. The children were fascinated to learn about the delicious foods enjoyed during Eid and they even had the chance to taste dates! It was wonderful to hear some of the children's own Ramadan and Eid experiences and to see them all showing respect and an interest in one another’s religion and traditions.
We have been learning the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen. The children explored different versions of the story and enjoyed retelling it using props and small-world resources in preparation for oral storytelling. They investigated our bread basket which has different types of bread from around the world. Last week the children had a go at making and baking their own! The children learnt about the different ingredients, how bread is made, and the importance of weighing and measuring when cooking. Some children created their own recipe books and shopping lists in the message centre. It was lovely to hear the children's experiences of tasting the bread when they got home. Some children added tasty toppings, some shared it with their family and others ate it all to themselves... just like The Little Red Hen!
Following our learning about pets and vets, the children got a very special delivery of 10 little eggs which hatched in the incubator! The children have shown great curiosity and kindness while observing them and handling them. We have been talking about the importance of 'gentle hands' and reminded the children about the good hygiene practices, particularly the importance of washing our hands after touching animals. Following this, the children have been learning all about the life-cycle of a chick and created their very own life-cycles. Although we had to wave our 10 chicks goodbye last week as they go back to the farm, this experience has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop empathy, responsibility and an understanding of how to care for living things. They have loved using these skills to care for our pretend pets in the role play this week.
Ahead of the Easter holidays, we have been talking about the Easter story and Easter celebrations. The children have enjoyed creating Easter cards, Easter crafting and talking about spring and new life!
We look forward to hearing about the children's Easter holiday experiences when we return back to school! :)
Our Early Years children were filled with excitement as they welcomed the farm (and the sunshine - yay) on the 2nd March. Farmer Danni and Farmer Angie returned again for another year, bringing a wonderful selection of friendly and extremely cute animals, including kids (in cute jumpers!), lambs, ducks, guinea pigs, mice, and even a six-week-old calf who was on her first outing!
The kids in blue jumpers were a hit with the children (and the staff). The children had an amazing time stroking, holding and learning about the animals. Some of the children had a go at brushing the pony and feeding the lambs and ducks.
Farmer Danielle and Farmer Angie were full of praise for our children. They commented on how impeccably behaved they were with their kind hands, walking feet and quiet voices. Well done Early Years!
Early Years Forest School
During our Forest School sessions, the children have been learning about the Artist Andy Goldsworthy, who creates artwork using natural materials found outdoors.
While exploring our woodlands, the children began to notice lots of amazing shapes and patterns in nature. They were especially fascinated by spiral shapes, spotting them on logs, bark, shells and we even discussed the spiral patterns on our own fingerprint. Inspired by what they discovered, the children created their own nature art using stones, conkers, twigs and shells. They carefully arranged the materials to make wonderful spiral.
The children also enjoyed experimenting with different textures, senses and colours. They used spices like cinnamon and turmeric to create artwork on fabric and chalk pens to draw patterns on leaves they found.
It was a fantastic session full of creativity and curiosity.
Early Years Mastering Number at Home Parent Workshop
This term we launched our Early Years Mastering Number Parent Project. This exciting project shares some of the resources and learning that we do in school and provides parents and carers with some fun games that they can use to support their child at home. It was fantastic to welcome so many parents and carers, giving them the opportunity to learn how to play the games with the children, whilst having fun with maths!
We have also provided every child with some double sided counters to use at home during the project to support their child's learning. It has been great to see the children engaging in the maths project at home via Seesaw!
Year 1 participated in an exciting history workshop about the lives of two very important nurses, Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. The children LOVED dressing up and role playing, bringing to life their Sticky Knowledge about these two very important people from the nineteenth century and why they are remembered today. Everyone got involved and had a part to play and the children learnt so much! They haven't stopped sharing their learning since!
We have been very busy planning, creating and improving our Emergency! Marketplace stalls. We decided what we wanted to focus on and worked in groups to develop our ideas. The children did an EXCELLENT job of explaining their knowledge to the grown ups and sharing their learning from across the term. We hope you enjoyed your visit and learnt something new too!
Year 1 have had a busy term at school! We have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the life of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. We got to explore some of the ingredients that Mary used in her herbal remedies such as okra, lemon grass, ginger, aloe vera and lemons. We enjoyed smelling, touching and understanding more about some of the key ingredients that Mary used to help cure soldiers in the past.
In science we have been investigating, drawing and labelling the different parts of a plant we can see. We have also planted seeds and are carefully ensuring they have everything they need to grow in the hope that they might begin to germinate! It has also been lovely seeing the daffodils we planted back in December began to blossom!
We have also been labelling the parts of the body such as head, fingers and feet. We had fun lying on the floor in different positions and asking our partner to instruct us in a particular pose, which we then described. We also explored how our bodies change after exercise and recorded our results, including our heart rate.
In geography we have been focusing on the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom. We have used aerial maps to find and label each one which produced some interesting discussions. We have also been applying directional language to navigate our way around school using a compass and learnt about the first four points on a compass: north, south, east and west. We really enjoyed learning how to use this new equipment!
In keeping with the United Kingdom theme we have also been investigating traditional music from each country of the UK and have enjoyed listening to jolly Morris music, a passionate Welsh Male Voice Choir, the powerful and uplifting Bagpipes and some traditional Irish dance music. We drew pictures and wrote adjectives about how each piece of music made us feel.
Following on from Oak's brilliant dance at the recent Dance Festival, Beech and Silver Birch have been participating in some dance workshops led by Mrs Douglass from the Schools Sport Partnership, based on Florence Nightingale. We have had a wonderful time telling Florence's story through the medium of dance.
In our Mastering Number sessions we have been investigating odd and even numbers and what to expect when adding 2 to odd or even number. We have also been making up our own 'First, Then and Now' stories. In maths we have been working systematically applying our knowledge of number bonds up to 10 and extending them to 20, for example, "If I know 5 + 3 = 8 then I know 15 + 3 = 18". We have also been focusing on fact families, using part-whole models to help us with our addition and subtraction number facts. We have recently been counting to and from 50. We have been thinking about two-digit numbers and splitting them into tens and ones.
We have also enjoyed taking part in golf and tennis workshops this term! In tennis, it was great learning different drills to warm up and help with our foot work. We then practised some different skills using rackets and balls. We had lots of fun and some of us are even thinking of playing some more tennis again! We also thoroghly enjoyed our golf workshops, playing different target games and improving our hand-eye coordination.
As well as our terrific class trips to London we have been extremely busy using our creative skills in lots of different ways to support our learning about The Great Fire of London. We had two exciting events: 1666 Creative Day and our 1666 Dress up Day.
During these specials days and throughout our Busy Learning time we have created a skyline of London, inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We also created individual houses to make Pudding Lane and watched in disbelief as it burnt to the ground (on the playground) in about five minutes!!
We have also been scientists, investigating which materials are waterproof and which are not. In recent years we have all become more aware of the importance of washing our hands. So, we took part in an experiment to prove this by using environmentally friendly, biodegradable glitter to show how germs are passed on by touch. We discussed the fact that we have both good and bad germs but that by washing our hands we can get rid of most germs.
We have also been busy exploring our History Sticky Knowledge thinking all about chronology. To help us explore this further the teachers brought in baby photos of themselves, their first toys and books and the children had to explore the primary sources carefully for evidence to help them order the items chronologically.
We have also been learning about hygiene issues in 1666 and what people did to try and prevent the smell! We have been exploring the use of scent bags and have been practising our sewing techniques in preperation for making our own scent bags. When we finally made our very own scent bags they were greeted with mixed reviews about the smell! :-)
During our trips to London we learnt all about the Ship's Biscuits which Thomas Farriner would have baked for the Navy. We decided that it would be worth us trying some of these ourselves! We used an authentic recipe and everyone got to try one. We had mixed reviews but lots of people decided that they were tastier than they expected them to be!
In Maths we have imagained ourselves fleeing from The Great Fire crossing The River Thames in boats, using our knowledge of arrays and multiplication facts to help us. We have also been investigating how to measure length and height in centimetres accurately. We have learnt that it is very important to start measuring the object from the start point by ensuring that the 0 on the ruler is placed there.
To launch our focus on The Great Fire of London, each year 2 class visited London.
We travelled up to London by coach, looking at famous landmarks along the way out of the window. First, we explored Sir Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s Cathedral. We listened to our guide as they explained what happened to the cathedral during The Great Fire of London, what survived and how it was rebuilt after the fire. We walked around the cathedral looking at the amazing sculptures, memorials and mosaics. We had a chance to role-play how the fire was fought and sat down right under the dome on the floor looking upwards. We also got to lie down, looking up at the ceiling of the dome, focusing on the incredible artworks. It was a really special experience.
We then walked through the City of London and arrived at Pudding Lane. We were able to explore the outside of The Monument and its significance in remembering The Great Fire of London. We sung London's Burning at Monument Square and then went and explored Pudding Lane, thinking about how it has changed over time. We were even able to stand in the exact spot the fire started!
Our day was not over yet! We then walked to Tower Bridge, stopping along the Thames Path to soak up the sights and sounds of London, which included looking at HMS Belfast on the other side of the Thames! We climbed 211 steps, stopping at various points along the way, until we reached the viewing platform where we stood on top of a glass floor, looking down to The River Thames below! We also saw amazing views of London and spotted lots of famous landmarks!
ALL of the children were exemplary role models for our school and we are extremely proud of them!
Despite each day being very long and tiring the children had a wonderful and unforgettable day, which will live long in their memories.
We have been very busy planning our marketplace stalls and working collaboratively to bring to life our plans!
On Wednesday we held our Marketplace showcasing our learning from our Spring project 'Fire, Fire!'. The children presented their Sticky Knowledge learning with confidence and enthusiasum.
Some of the amazing stalls included; a Science stall including discussions around the Great Plague of 1665 which included a germ experiment to teach our grown-ups how germs can spread, sewing and creating scent bags, Samuel Pepys, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, the Shard, the London Eye, Big Ben, how London has changed since 1666, firefighting and how this has changed, spot the difference between the old and new St. Paul's Cathedral, trying ship's biscuits and finally Pudding Lane was also brought to life which included Thomas Farriner's bakery!
Thank you very much for all of your support and the lovely feedback shared on the proud clouds.
We are all extremely proud of the Year 2 children and we are sure that you are too!
On Wednesday 4th March, Beth Gomm from Christian Connections in School came to visit each year 2 class to run a question and answer session about why Easter is important to her. The children came up with some brilliant and insightful questions which has helped them think deeply about our key question for RE this half term: 'How important is it to Christians that Jesus came back to life after his crucifixion?'. Thank you to Beth for coming in to support us in exploring this important event in the Christian calendar.
Holly Class were lucky to participate in the School Games Fencing Festival at Desborough College on Wednesday 11th March. The children joined some other schools to compete in a number of games. They warmed up with a game of Avoid the Sword then broke off into teams. They then completed a carousel of activities supported by some Desborough students and the Little Musketeers coaches. They learnt the correct stance to begin fencing and had loads of fun learning to advance and retreat. They even got to have some individual matches against their friends wearing fencing helmets and some practice swords. Well done to Emma Fitzgerald for organising such a successful event. We definitely have some superb fencers in Holly Class! :-)
The Eco representatives have continued their fantastic work by placing the bird feeders around our school grounds. The children carefully chose suitable locations, thinking about where birds might feel safe and have easy access to food. It was exciting to hang up their homemade feeders and begin attracting more wildlife into our school environment. We are now eagerly watching to see which birds come to visit!
The Eco representatives also took part in the Great Big School Clean, joining schools across the country in this important environmental campaign. This nationwide event encourages pupils to help look after their local area by collecting litter and protecting and promoting wildlife.
The children worked hard to pick up litter from around the school grounds, showing both great teamwork and responsibility. They discussed why litter is harmful to animals and the environment and how even small actions can make a big difference.
We are very proud of their efforts and their commitment to keeping our school clean and welcoming for everyone.
Eco tip: Picking up litter is a simple way to make a BIG difference! When you see rubbish on the ground, safely pick it up and put it in the bin. It helps keeps our school and community clean and safe for everyone.
School Council have once again been VERY busy this term. It started with collecting lots of crème eggs for The Alexander Devine Children's Hospice - The Big Spring Knit. We had so much fun counting up all the eggs and were AMAZED to discover we had collected over 250 eggs across the school - thank you to everyone who donated an egg or more!
We then sold Red Noses for Comic Relief - it was great seeing so many children and families getting involved buying noses and all coming together to support such a great cause. By the end of it we had completely sold out which felt like a huge achievement!
Finally during the last week of term we had the fun of selling knitted chicks and friends for The Big Spring Knit! As always these were very popular and also sold out! Thank you to everyone who donated to two great causes across this term!
In nurture the children have had a busy half term decorating our spring board by making chicks, lambs and daffodils. We have also made spring coloured paperchains and beautiful, coloured weaved pictures for our door.
This half term we have been doing lots of different activities that explore our senses. We listened to animal sounds, tried to identify objects in a bag just by using our hands. We had a tray of items, then remove one item and everyone else had to look and see which item was missing, finally and probably our favourite activity was crisp tasting, first was smelt the crisp and the tasted it, we had the guess the flavour.
Finally, the nurture team and children would like to thank the PTFA for purchasing some new toys for our room, we have new dressing-up, farm animals, farm vehicles, car transported, vets set, doctors set, train station, shop till, wooden kitchen set, utensils set and an amazing new dolls house complete with accessories. The children have had a great time playing with these new things.
We have been practising our campfire cooking skills at Forest School during the past few weeks. Firstly, we toasted rosemary damper bread on our cooking sticks. We have also been refining our knife skills, chopping fruit to make skillet apples and peppers to add to rice noodles. But perhaps the most interesting snack we made was popcorn - cooked in our handmade popcorn 'shoogler'! It was fascinating to watch as the kernels popped and puffed up when they were shaken over the flames. Finally, this week we had a go at toasting hot cross buns - they were delicious!
