As the weather gets colder and the leaves change colors, countless people find themselves watching the same show they binged at the same time last year: Gilmore Girls. If you are unfamiliar with the show, it follows the story of a single mother and her daughter as they work their way through life. Gilmore Girls is not a show you only watch once; most will say they rewatch it in the fall. Here are a few reasons why you should consider joining them.
Gilmore Girls immediately brings charm to the screen with its location, which is a fictional small town in Connecticut called Stars Hollow. There’s a sense of comfort brought by everyone knowing each other as characters walk to the town diner or grocery store. The coziness brought by the small-town festivities, like the annual Autumn Festival, makes it more enjoyable to watch during the fall months.
As mentioned earlier, the show follows a mother, Lorelai, and her daughter, Rory, through the events of their lives. The plot of the show remains fairly constant as it revolves around Rory’s high school and college life, obviously beginning in the fall of every year. It also tends to skip over or somewhat ignore the summer months, making fall a more prominent time in the town of Stars Hollow.
The biggest part of why Gilmore Girls is a great fall show is the decor. The town square is often decorated with scarecrows, pumpkins, twinkle lights, and other festive ornaments that coincide with fall. You can also see many shops in Stars Hollow decorated for fall. Early in Season One, as the town celebrated Thanksgiving, popular grocery store Doose’s Market tried to make a display of the Mayflower with soup cans. Finally, the characters’ wardrobes also reflect the fall weather. Most often you see them in sweaters, layers, or autumnal colors like red or brown.
Gilmore Girls is just a very feel-good show, which I think people could use as the seasons transition into something cold and dreary. As I watch it for the fourth time, I can easily say that Summer would not do this show justice the way Fall does. Fall is definitely not my favorite season, but my Gilmore Girls rewatch makes it something to look forward to every year. If you’re looking for a good show to watch on chilly autumn nights, Gilmore Girls is a great place to start!
