Pen Pals

The Pen Pals project had a significant impact on pupils by developing intercultural understanding, communication skills and empathy through sustained collaboration with partner schools in Nepal, Tanzania, Spain and France. Rather than learning about other countries through textbooks alone, students engaged in authentic dialogue with peers of a similar age, sharing experiences of school life, family, hobbies and local culture. This helped pupils recognise both the similarities they shared and the different opportunities and challenges experienced by young people around the world.

The activity contributed directly to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), by providing meaningful international learning opportunities, and Sustainable Development Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), through sustained collaboration between schools in the UK, Nepal, Lebanon and France. Student feedback consistently demonstrated that the exchanges challenged stereotypes, promoted respect for different cultures and helped pupils recognise themselves as part of a wider global community.
