Thu Nguyen is not just a senior at Flour Bluff High School, but she is an inspiration to younger students. Nguyen participates in many extracurriculars, maintains a strong academic record and social life, and has big goals for her future.
Nguyen is involved in numerous clubs here at Flour Bluff, some of which she has earned leadership roles in.
“I do robotics and I'm vice president of NAHS and then I also participate in the drone club here at the school,” said Nguyen.
However, Nguyen hasn’t just become a member of these clubs, they’ve helped shape who she is today.
“They've allowed me to develop leadership skills and also work with my classmates and be more active as a person,” said Nguyen.
One of the requirements of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is that members must enter an art competition, which Nguyen is not new to. Nguyen has been competing in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition since her freshman year of high school.
“I received the gold seal at VASE and the medal meant a lot to me because it was my freshman year. It's a hard achievement to earn,” said Nguyen. When asked what a gold seal is, Nguyen said, “It's like the medals that you get for qualifying for state and stuff. It’s like a medal and it's the highest award that you can receive.”
On the other hand, some of Nguyen’s most memorable high school memories have come from the robotics club. Nguyen is the driver of the competing robot, and she often attends out-of-town meets with her fellow teammates.
“I'd probably relive my robotics trips, like going out of town, like four to five weeks, no, four to five days out of the year or something,” said Nguyen when asked what high school memories she’d like to relive.
At school Nguyen takes on many challenging courses. In fact, she is enrolled in five AP classes this school year, yet there is one subject that stands out the most to her.
“My favorite subject in school is history. I think it's just interesting and I think it's like a subject that can’t be boring and it also requires no math,” said Nguyen.
While Nguyen’s favorite school subject is history, her favorite teacher teaches art. Ms. Lovin is the AP Art 4 teacher here at Flour Bluff, and she has made a large impact on Nguyen’s life.
“Probably Ms. Lovin. I've known her since my freshman year and she helped me a lot to get to state and to win it so I'd probably say her,” said Nguyen.
Outside of school, Nguyen enjoys going on runs with her friends whenever she has free time.
“I share running with my friends, like Emma, she runs with me a few days a week,” said Nguyen.
Funnily enough, running isn’t something Nguyen has always enjoyed doing. She began her running journey in hopes of keeping in shape for another sport.
“And then for running, I did soccer at one point, so I did it to keep myself conditioned, but eventually I started to like it more than actual soccer,” Nguyen said when asked how she got started with running.
After graduation, Nguyen plans to pursue a higher education and later enlist in the military.
“My plans after graduation is to obtain the [Air Force] ROTC scholarship and attend a university or college somewhere in Texas, and then go to the military afterwards, commissioned as an officer,” said Nguyen.
Nguyen has chosen to go this path after considering all of the great things her brother has accomplished when going down the same route.
“I chose this path because I take after my brother a lot and he's also in the military and my goals for the future is to obtain all the benefits that I can get from the military for like my family and like my future kids and stuff,” said Nguyen.
However, Nguyen isn’t simply enlisting, she already knows what she wants her job in the military to be.
“I hope to get my mechanics license and work on the F-35,” said Nguyen.
All of Nguyen’s great accomplishments and future plans set aside, Nguyen has had a great time attending Flour Bluff Independent School District (FBISD).
“I've attended Flour Bluff High School since pre-K,” said Nguyen. “Always like seeing, probably like moving grade levels with the same group because you always see familiar faces and you don't lose your friends,” said Nguyen when asked what her favorite part of attending FBISD has been.
When asked what kind of legacy she wants to leave behind at Flour Bluff, Nguyen said “I just want to be someone who is creative.” We can’t wait to see the great things Thu Nguyen will accomplish.
