“…life is like a video game.”- Sophia Bateson
Sophia Bateson has been attending school in Flour Bluff since the 8th grade, but is originally from Clifton, Texas. She finds Flour Bluff’s small town energy in a big city rather comforting. Bateson has found a specific niche in the realm of theatre, mock trial, and sports information. Reigning president of the thespian society, witness in mock trial, and color commentator in sports information, she has left her mark all over Flour Bluff High School.
“I’ve been in every show since my freshman year; my sophomore year I was the historian for the International Thespian Society and these past two years I have been the president. Which is really cool” Bateson said.
Bateson’s sheer talent, experience in theatre, and leadership role causes her to be a big role model for many underclassmen and others starting theatre. One of these underclassmen is Kelsi Uhl. She has been in theatre with Bateson since her freshman year in Annie jr.
“She’s really good when it comes to leadership, and theatre, and the Thespian Honor Society,” Uhl said.
Bateson has also created a welcoming environment for our theatre community, and hopes that her friends and people she has influenced over the years can uphold the same standard of kindness in the club.
“I just really hope that our thespian society and our theatre club can uphold an environment that I feel like I’ve tried to build for the last few years as president. One where we are welcoming of other people and kind to everyone around us,” Bateson said.
Bateson also says that being in mock trial and sports information have helped her present herself better in a multitude of situations.
“I feel better at presenting myself in certain situations now because I have had to present myself in so many different situations. And I think it has made me more confident around people as a whole,” Bateson said.
In Bateson’s extensive resume, she has met and connected with many advisors including,“Ms. Samuels is the theatre sponsor and she’s definitely had a significant impact on my life because I’ve been a part of her class all 4 years of high school. Her way of teaching definitely is very student-led, so it has given me a lot of opportunities to learn how to be a leader in any situation.” Additionally to Erin Samuels, Brandi Venable has also had a significant impact on Bateson’s life:
“Mrs. Venable has been the mock trial sponsor for the past two years and I’ve also taken her forensics classes and she is just a huge inspiration, she’s just a very fun adult to be around, and I really like the way she runs her clubs and her classes,” Bateson said.
Bateson has had very special memories made from this year’s mock trial season including a very important first for the team.
“This past year we advanced to the final round in mock trial, which is not something we ever thought was gonna happen. So that was really exciting,” Bateson said.
After having such great guidance in high school, Bateson will be attending the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse and majoring in Theatre. Bateson does not have any specific plans for her future, her desire is to graduate college.
“I chose this path because I think liberal arts degrees are just super diverse and I want to go to college, I want to further my education,” Bateson said. “I also would love to work in theatre in any way shape or form. Whether at a playhouse doing costumes or wigs or actually getting to be an actor on stage.”
