After spending 11 years as an active student at Flour Bluff ISD senior, Scottie McCormick will be graduating this May. As the current Thespian Society secretary and an active member in both Mock Trial and Sports Information, Scottie has left his own personal mark on the school, and allowed it to leave its mark on him.
“Before I did Sports Info, I hadn’t done anything sports related at all and I got to learn a lot about things that I had never known about,” McCormick said.
Due to his involvement in so many clubs, McCormick has made many personal connections with staff members, such as Erin Samuels, the sponsor of the Thespian Society and Brandi Venable, the Mock Trial sponsor.
”[Ms. Samuels] helped me a lot with getting on stage and doing what I love,” McCormick said “and Mrs. Venable, who is the forensics teacher and the mock trial sponsor, she’s just an amazing teacher to have and I really like working with her in clubs.”
History teachers at Flour Bluff High School, such as Steven Jolly and John Sherrod also positively impacted McCormick in his high school experience. Even helping him decide his future major.
“I never did any clubs with them, but Mr. Jolly and Mr. Sherrod were really awesome history teachers to have and they definitely motivated me to be a history major,” McCormick said.
McCormick plans on attending the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse, majoring in history and minoring in theatre.
“My favorite subject is history, because I think that it is all really interesting and I really like learning from the past and how we can use it to figure out how things are happening now, and prevent things from happening.” McCormick said.
McCormick has no specific plans for the future, his main objective is to graduate college. Afterward he has the idea to possibly work in a museum, or possibly as a teacher. He has enough time to figure out what he wants to do with his degree once he has one.
“Anything that I could do with like a museum, or maybe even teaching would be really cool,” McCormick said.
Outside of school, McCormick enjoys playing various video games and creating slideshows. He says that he always shares his hobbies with friends, as many of them share similar interests. McCormick said that one little known fact about him is that he has been to Australia.
“Whenever I was 8 years old, I went on a make it wish trip to go to the Shopkins headquarter in Australia.”
McCormick shared that he chose to go to the Shopkins headquarters because when he was a kid seeking medical treatment for an autoimmune disorder, he would be rewarded with Shopkins.
“Whenever they, um, let me, uh, pick my make a wish trip, I really wanted to go to the headquarters 'cause it was really important to me,” McCormick said.
Through his four years of high school, McCormick has learned a lot and chose to describe the experience as,“fun, formative and possible.”
Adding onto his experience, McCormick shared advice for underclassmen just trying to make it through the four years of high school,
“Never feel pressured to do something that you don’t want to do. Whether that be a club or just like a hobby. If it’s not making you happy, don't bother putting in the time to do it.” McCormick said.
McCormick plans to take his many talents 1,395 miles away to the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse. His goal? To leave a wonderful impact on everyone he meets.
