Senior Megan Lawrence makes an impact through her kindness and perseverance in Flour Bluff ISD. She is a part of the Flour Bluff Athletic Trainers and helps her fellow students recover from their sports related injuries.
“I think one thing that makes Flour Bluff unique and special to me is the community, the way we approach each other, the way everyone gets along with each other, and just a sense of spirit,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence takes her job training athletes very seriously, cultivating the relationship amongst teams and helping others through what she does. Lawrence is finishing up her first year in the program.
“My role (is) ensuring that everyone who has an injury, is able to recover and get back after the sport, and add the full percentile of their abilities.” Lawrence said.
What pushed her to join was an injury after her junior track season. She would spend time in the room waiting for her turn to get treated when she took notice of the effect trainers had on athletes.
“I watched my trainer do rehab with other athletes and get them back out to their sport, good as new, and I realized in those two months, like, ‘wow, if I'm able to impact other people by helping them get back out to their sport, I would love to do that,’” Lawrence said.
Aside from training, Lawrence also enjoys reading, listening to music and going on walks in nature. She says that she's always had a love for these activities and it only grew with her. Out of all three, she enjoys her time with nature most.
“Being outside of nature allows me to escape from everything that I'm dealing with in my head. It allows me to let go of everything, focus on what's here in the moment, and kind of forget about everything that I'm going through,” Lawrence said.
There are also several teachers who have made an impact on her life for the better, teaching and giving her new skills and aiding in her high school journey. She listed Sara Laza, Robert Steagall, Audre Underbrink, Brandon Bourg and her head athletic trainer, Coach Morales.
“Mrs. Laza made an impact on my life because she brought the confidence that I have now.” Lawrence said.
Mr. Steagall helped inform her of the world she was about to enter into, Mrs. Underbrink acted like a therapist of sorts, and Bourg helped welcome her into the basketball community when she felt like an outsider. Morales acted like a motherly figure for Lawrence, providing her a second home and a safe space.
“She really stuck out to me because she let me be who I am. She accepted who I was, disregarding who I was in my past, she took me under her wing as her own daughter,” Lawrence said.
In the next 5-10 years, Lawrence hopes to be satisfied with what she has done and for the people she loves to be happy with her.
“Fulfilling my dream to be an athletic trainer, to watch my family, thrive, and watch everyone around me thrive, just be happy and live life to the fullest,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence describes her high school in three words: Fearful, unexpected and unpredictable. Even though she didn’t find what she wanted to do right away, she ended her journey going down the path she is passionate about.
“Once you have something that you know you want, go after it. Don't let anybody hold you back, don't let any of your fears overcome you. Put your best foot down and say, ‘I can do it. It's me. I know what I can do, and that's what I'm gonna do’. You see it, you want it, you get it.” Lawrence said.
Lawrence will be continuing her education at Del Mar College for two years then transferring to get her bachelors or masters in Physical Training.
“I thought if I could use my experience of being injured, and knowing how to recover, I can give that to other athletes, and let them know that just because you're injured doesn't mean your season has to stop.” Lawrence said.
Lawrence wants to leave behind advice for underclassmen trying to find what their passion is:
“If you see something you want, if there's even the slightest sliver of a dream that you have, pursue it. Don't give up. Keep in mind that once you start something, you always finish it.” Lawrence said.
