On Oct. 30, Congressman Michael Cloud, representative of the 27th congressional district, visited Flour Bluff high school to tour the Tango Flight program and the nationally recognizedFlour Bluff Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp program.
Congressman Cloud toured the Tango Flight aviation program’s hand built plane that has been in progress for two years, but is expected to be done late this school year.
Flour Bluff is one of seven high schools in Texas that offer an aviation program to students. The aviation program is led by teacher Caleb Harris.
“It’s been a huge learning curve, trying to stay one step ahead of the kids, learning how to build this plane,” Harris said. “It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been interesting, it’s the only class I can imagine teaching.”
Spencer St. John, a student in the program, gave a brief presentation of the RV-12 plane he and many students have worked immensely on.
“[Building the plane] has been very fun, there have been plenty of difficult times that we’ve had to deal with and figure out new ways to assemble [the plane], but for the most part it’s been pretty fun,” said St. Johns.
After the Tango Flight presentation , Congressman Cloud visited the NJROTC practice hall and met cadets Fernanda Mendoza, Gabriel Graham , and Jolina Matos. Congressman Cloud awarded the Flour Bluff NJROTC program and the Waldron Street Journal with a congressional award, challenge coins for student tour leaders and personally commend them for all of their hard work.
Flour Bluff ISD Superintendent Chris Steinbruck commented on Congressman Cloud’s visit and its importance to the Flour Bluff Community.
“It tells a lot about our community. Our congressman represents a large district and so there’s a lot of schools that he could’ve chosen to attend, and he picked Flour Bluff out of all the school districts. It’s just a testament to all the hard work our teachers and staff and our students with what they're doing in their programs,” Steinbruck said.
