In FBHS Hornet History, there has never been a tennis team that has qualified for state competition before, but our 2025-2026 Tennis team didn't stop there, they pushed all the way through the State semi-finals and earned a historic win as second place overall in the 2025 UIL State Tennis competition on Oct. 24, 2025.
“We knew that this was going to be our best year and our best chance to go as far as we did,” senior Zachary Graham said.
The road to State was not easy for the team, at the start of their season many players faced injuries and were unable to participate. However, the support of team mates and coaches helped players come back at full force.
“My coaches really inspired me because I had just come off an injury, so it was really nice for them to be really supportive about the whole thing, my teammates too,” sophomore Alessandra Dalton said.
The success of the team is not just credited to their hard work, but also comes from the mental push of Coaches Steve Bond and Jacqueline Bond.
“[Our coaches] reminded us all the time that we could do something super special and they kept us focused on that,” Senior Mason Evans said.
While the team pushed through district, region, and state-they faced many challenging teams, forcing everyone to play their part.
“Our districts and region are pretty hard out of most regions throughout the state,” Senior Camille Neri said, “So that was our main goal, getting past region [and state], but [at] district we normally dominate during that time so it was just getting past region.”
As the team winds down and celebrates, some have left words of inspiration to younger players who strive for state as well.
“Make it fun, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It goes wrong,” Neri said. “In your mind it always goes wrong.
