The Flour Bluff Yearbook staff in Corpus Christi, Texas, has earned the “Award of Distinguished Merit.” This prestigious award is the 2nd highest rating achievable, just below the Star Award. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Yearbook staff, who have poured endless hours into creating a book that captures the 2023-2024 Flour Bluff High School school year.
Carly Brady is a Section Editor for the Flour Bluff Yearbook. Brady’s main job is to assist the Co-Editor in Chiefs, Calli Cordell and Miranda Lopez. She will go over completed spreads and make sure each page is accurate and coincides with each other.
“Being in Yearbook is extremely enjoyable and fun,” Brady said. "I would not have the amazing friends that I have now.”
Throughout her time in Yearbook, Brady has learned to communicate and apply teamwork with the Yearbook staff. From shared spreads, to joint stories for varying media needs, Brady has worked in a variety of student publications and fulfilled those needs accordingly.
“Without these important principles, the process of making the Yearbook would not be as smooth or simple as it is now,” Brady said.
Violet Valdez is the 2nd Section Editor, with this being her 3rd year in Yearbook. Valdez acts as the Editor in Chief’s second set of eyes. Like Brady, she goes over spreads and checks if anyone needs help with anything. If one of the Editor in Chiefs needs a second opinion, Valdez is the person they will go to. For Valdez, Yearbook has impacted her school life in many ways.
“I honestly thought that Yearbook would just be a filler elective my sophomore year. I’ve been given so many opportunities,” Valdez said.
Valdez has been a part of many events behind the scenes. For her, the staff has been an amazing experience and has made her feel privileged to be friends and be creative with many of them. In addition, Valdez expresses how rough her first year of Yearbook was since the advisor, Mrs. Brandewie, was out for maternity leave.
“For part of the year there was a substitute teacher and she had no clue what was going on. It was very stressful to do work but in the end we got it done in time,” Valdez said.
For Valdez, the best part about being on the Yearbook staff is working alongside talented students, which she has grown super close with over the past 3 years.
Miranda Lopez, the Co-Editor in Chief, helps everyone stay on task with their spreads, and makes sure that they are consistent with the Yearbook theme.
Lopez helps with the newer staff with learning how to do basic caption editing for the spreads. Lopez’s main line of work is photography. She is the person who makes sure the photos that get put into the Yearbook are worthy of being in it. For Lopez, she has no major setbacks, but being able to stay motivated and getting the perfect photos has been a huge challenge.
“It has given me my closest friends, it has given me the opportunity with my photography and being able to make connections with other photographers,” Lopez said.
Calli Cordell is one of the Co-Editor in Chiefs of the Flour Bluff Yearbook. As Editor in Chief, Cordell ensures that all the spreads are aligned and that each staff member understands and completes their job. She helps keep everyone stay organized and assigns people to different spreads.
Yearbook has impacted Cordell, allowing her to meet so many new people that have now become her friends. She has been able to gain trust and build a cohesive new team with the staff that she has.
“I’ve learned how to not be afraid to ask for help. Some setbacks that I've faced are feeling discouraged on the photos or how the spreads are designed, but that hasn’t stopped me from continuing on in Yearbook. One good memory I have is making new friends and finding joy in designing spreads,” Cordell said.
The Flour Bluff Yearbook staff is very passionate and proud of the work they have accomplished. They have held parties to celebrate the milestones and the work they have completed, creating the Flour Bluff Yearbook.
This year they are looking forward to completing the Yearbook and possibly earning the Star Award. Follow the Yearbook team’s journey throughout the year as they capture unforgettable moments, create lasting memories, and bring the school’s story to life!
