Senior Scarlett Jorgensen’s academic career started at Metro E. Elementary in Corpus Christi, then transitioning to attending schools in the Flour Bluff district.
As she prepares to graduate, she reflects on her years here and the journey that has shaped her future aspirations.
“I’ve been at Flour Bluff since the 4th grade,” Jorgensen said. “My favorite part about Flour Bluff is seeing the same people all the time.”
Due to her strong connections to the Flour Bluff community and her involvement so much, it has been easy to watch the growth she and her peers have been enduring.
Throughout high school, Jorgensen has been involved in the yearbook since her sophomore year, after taking photojournalism in her freshman year to prepare for the role.
She currently serves as one of the two Copy Editors after her junior year role as the Photography Editor. Her hard work and dedication to the yearbook have earned her the respect of both her peers and teachers.
Her love for photography runs deep. After her sophomore year, one of her most memorable moments was attending the Interscholastic League Press Conference at the University of Texas at Austin, a workshop for journalism students.
“We got to photograph all day, and we got assessed,” Jorgensen said. “It was really helpful for me because that’s what I wanted to do in the future.”
Her dedication to photography and media has helped cushion her to prepare for her upcoming career in Sports Media.
“My dream is to work with MLB or NFL teams,” Jorgensen said.
She plans to attend Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where she will major in communications and hopefully join a sports media program.
She would like to leave behind this quote: “If it’s meant to be, it’ll be, so don’t try to force something to happen, it’s not going to feel natural and it’s not going to feel right.”
As she moves on to the next chapter of her life, she leaves her underclassmen friends with positive advice.
“Enjoy every moment, take it all in, don’t try to rush everything because it does go by really fast,” Jorgensen said.
Jorgensen’s goal for the next 5-10 years is to work with local teams, such as the Corpus Christi Ice Rays or the Hooks, refining her photography and communication skills.
“I want to work on my photography skills, my media skills, my public communication skills, she says.
Throughout her time at Flour Bluff, Jorgensen has been guided by inspiring mentors, including Mrs. Steward, who had been her teacher in the fourth grade but is now a teacher at the high school.
“She’s always supported me and been that spirit you need every morning,” Jorgensen reflects.
Outside of school, Jorgensen enjoys baking–an activity she learned from her grandmother–and attending concerts across various genres.
“I go to a ton of concerts of all genres, like I’m going to a country concert in May, and I just went to a ska concert a month ago. I have a really big music range, I’ll listen to anything.”
As for advice for future Flour Bluff students, Jorgensen emphasizes the importance of cherishing time in high school.
“Make the most of your time with your friends, with your teachers, just at school, and in general.”
When asked what moment she would love to relive, Jorgensen can’t help but think of her final football season, filled with memorable moments shared with her friends.
“I’ll never forget the Red, White, and Blue theme. I painted myself as the American Flag, one of my friends was George Washington, one was the Statue of Liberty, and one was an Eagle.”
Jorgensen describes her high school experience in three words, “Rewarding, challenging, fun.”
As her time at Flour Bluff draws to a close, Jorgensen leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and a passion for photography and media. Flour Bluff is sure to see great things from her in the years to come, and her journey is just beginning.
