Flour Bluff Intermediate School Counselor Mr. Brian Scholz is approaching a significant milestone, celebrating 20 years counseling 5th and 6th graders in Flour Bluff ISD.
"I look forward to going into work to see my students and teachers while working with them all to help them in whatever way I can,” Scholz said. “Although I have 31 fantastic years in education on my side, I still have no intention on stopping yet.”
At the start of his career, he started fresh out of college by interviewing for a teaching job at Gregory Portland ISD in 1994.
“[I] started teaching English GT and regular English for 8th graders at Gregory Portland Junior High School.” Scholz said.
Teaching full time didn’t stop Scholz from pursuing a master's degree. He began his Master’s in Educational Administration in 1995, and finished in 1998.
“[I] attended night school twice a week after a full day of teaching,” Scholz said. “In August 1999, I then started my Master’s degree in School Counseling due to having enough hours to gain another degree in a related field.”
After receiving his 2nd Master’s degree in May 2001, he transitioned from his 9 years teaching in GPISD to 2 years as a counselor/administrator at Rockport Fulton Middle School in Rockport, Texas.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, but the drive back and forth from my home in Corpus Christi was a difficult one.
Due to the long, daily commutes, Scholz eagerly embraced the opportunity to join Flour Bluff when it arose in 2005.
“With 9 years from GP, 2 years from Rockport Fulton, and now 20 years in Flour Bluff, I will have 31 years in education come June 2025,” Scholz said. “I am thoroughly blessed.”
Over time, his role evolved as he embraced the dynamic responsibilities of a school counselor. This allowed him to gain more knowledge and experience in being a resource for others.
“Crisis counseling, academic counseling, grief counseling, group and individual counseling, gifted and talented testing, administration, classroom guidance, mentoring programs… are just several of the many areas I help out with.” Scholz said.
As a part of his commitment to supporting the students and staff, he emphasizes the importance of clear communication with the students’ parents and addressing concerns.
“I am always in constant communication with parents in regards to how their student is performing and any other aspects that may be arising from home and school,” Scholz said. “Each day that I come into work is a day whereby I have phone calls, emails, texts, and voicemails from parents and students asking for help, assistance, advice, etc.”
Reflecting on his 31-year career, Scholz expresses much gratitude for the numerous opportunities to impact the lives of students, staff, and families. He remains dedicated to education and counseling to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
“I feel very blessed and thank God each and everyday for the career path that he chose for me, and has allowed me to partake in.” Scholz said.
