Flour Bluff football games are not the same without Felix Deleon Jr. (Mr. Flex), known as the #1 Hornet Superfan. With his energy and loyalty to the team, Deleon is always in the stands, pumping up the crowd with his chants and cheers that keep the Hornet spirit alive.
“I promised myself that I would get up there and start cheering and get the crowd going,” Deleon Jr. said. “That’s where I’m at- been at it since 2012.”
His connection to Flour Bluff began in 1960. His mother, Coty Deleon, worked for the cafeteria for 34 years, and his father, Felix Deleon Sr., was a mechanic for the original Wrankosky’s. After graduating in 1976, he has seen the school evolve and the team grow.
“You know, as they say, ‘Once a Hornet, always a Hornet,’ ” Deleon Jr. said. “I’ve just loved getting involved with the kids.”
After returning to Flour Bluff in 2012, he has been in charge in the stands, turning the games into unforgettable experiences for the community.
“I went up there and I started cheering at my first game, getting everybody involved,” Deleon Jr. said. “And then the more games I went to, the more I could get the people and kids loving it.”
Because of his enthusiasm and passion for the football team, the cheerleaders presented him with a #1 Hornet Superfan jersey 3 years ago, a recognition he has cherished deeply.
“My first jersey I got faded out, but my second jersey that I’ve gotten from them is the one I wear now, my newer one,” Deleon Jr. said. “My older one, I save for baseball games.”
Deleon Jr.’s chants have become a staple at the games, sparking the excitement of fans once they hear his voice.
“My favorite chant is the one where I start off in the beginning of the game: ‘“I say FB, y’all say HORNETS,’” Deleon Jr. said. “My latest one is the ‘“2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar- all for the HORNETS, stand up and HOLLER.’”
Even at age 66, he still remains to be a committed supporter of the team. Despite his health obstacles, which include surviving a brain aneurysm and two strokes, he continues to bring his unwavering energy to every game, encouraging those around him.
“I just try to keep the energy going, even if they’re losing and we’re not having the best game of the night,” Deleon Jr. said. “I’m going to keep doing it.”
When he’s not at football games, he is cheering for the Hornets at other sporting events. Whether it’s volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, or tennis, he brings the same trademark energy, supporting the athletes on any field.
“I do what I do for the kids,” Deleon Jr. said. “I do it so they can feel appreciated as much as I do.”
To extend his cheers beyond the football field, he hopes to reach his goal to cheer for more sports, including the swim team.
“My next priority is that I’ve been asked numerous times to go cheer at a swim meet,” Deleon Jr. said.
Over the years of watching the Flour Bluff community grow, he has witnessed a transformation in their school spirit. The motto of ‘Class, Pride, and Heart’ resonates deeply among the students, which truly warms his heart.
“I’m so happy for our hornets, they go by our motto,” Deleon Jr. said. “Every year, they get more and more respectful, and it warms my heart.”
As Deleon Jr. continues to inspire both the players and fans for years to come, his dedication serves as a reminder of the impact that one person can have on a community. With the future in sight, he looks forward to cheering on the next generation of Hornet athletes, showing the true spirit of what it means to be a Hornet: committed, passionate, and always ready to uplift those around them.
"I’m blessed to be alive, and blessed to do what I do" - the #1 Hornet Superfan (Mr.Flex).
