Meet Fernando Fernandez Jr., Flour Bluff High School’s Beloved Choir Director. Fernando Fernandez Jr., affectionately known as Mr. Fe, has dedicated 24 of his 28 years in education to Flour Bluff ISD, transforming the high school choir program into one of the top in the region. Through his passion for music and mentorship, Mr. Fe has inspired countless students to find joy and purpose through song.
Mr. Fe’s journey as an educator began with a deep admiration for his mentor, Mr. Allen, who guided him from fifth grade through his early teaching years. “He was my hero and second father,” Mr. Fe shared. “One teacher who cared about me changed my life and set me on the path to this vocation.”
This influence shaped his mission to provide students with more than just music lessons. Whether conducting choirs, teaching music appreciation, or mentoring new teachers, Mr. Fe brings a holistic approach to his work, rooted in compassion and the belief that music can unite and inspire.
For Mr. Fe, the most rewarding moments of teaching come from witnessing students discover the transformative power of live performance. “While there is a song being performed, there is nothing else in the universe more important or more in tune with your soul,” he said.
He strives to make his classroom a place of engagement and support, where students feel comfortable sharing their perspectives. “Compromise and compassion are a daily activity,” he explained. “I care for all my students and teach them how to be better humans and musicians.”
Mr. Fe is passionate about fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts in his students. “Arts programs are always the first to be cut when districts discuss saving money,” he said. “I want my students to be advocates for the arts and support them throughout their lives.”
Under his leadership, the Flour Bluff choir program has grown into a family-like community, where members support one another and create lasting memories. He takes pride in seeing his students go on to music schools and return as alumni to share their stories and successes.
Mr. Fe’s hope for his legacy is that his students continue to sing with passion and advocate for the arts in their communities. “If you want to sing, anyone can sing—just let your heart and soul lead you,” he said.
His philosophy is captured in the program’s mantra: “Thank you for the music,” a reminder of the gratitude they share for the gift of song.
Outside of teaching, Mr. Fe is pursuing a master’s degree in music education and enjoys collecting vintage comic books, cooking, and traveling to visit former students and friends. He’s also an active member of the broader arts community, serving as vice president of the Harbor Playhouse and contributing to arts councils.
Through his dedication to his students and his unwavering belief in the power of music, Mr. Fe has created a program that is not only artistically excellent but also a cherished part of the Flour Bluff community. His legacy of compassion, excellence, and harmony will continue to resonate for years to come.
