Flour Bluff High School Senior Lydia Harris, has made a major impact at the school and on the field. Harris is a part of the Flour Bluff Hornet Band, holding a leadership position for the last two years as the Drum Major.
With each leadership position comes responsibility, while managing her studies Harris talked about her favorite things about being in her position, “I really loved being a drum major because it allowed me to get to know more about each person and develop a more lasting impact even after I graduate.” When asked about her position and the hard work it demands Harris responded with, “Band requires lots of dedication and commitment for long hours, it is also physically demanding as well.”
In addition to her musical extracurriculars, she is also a part of Anchored for Life and Science National Honor Society. During her time in Anchored of Life, she has established another leadership position as the president of the organization.
“Anchored for life started at the high school last December and I was chosen by Mrs. Carlisle to be a part of it, I was then soon voted Vice President,” said Harris. “That led to my position this year.”
When it comes to favorite memories throughout highschool, Harris always considered every band season memorable and enjoyable. She stated her love for band started with her sophomore year when football season was coming to an end, it was the last district game against Gregory-Portland and was the “closest game we’d ever played that year and we ended up winning last minute, it was also really fun because the whole band was rooting for our football team!” Harris said.
“Sophomore year band season was really fun, I had so many friends in the program and it was just a great time,” Harris said.
Balancing academic work while being involved with multiple extracurriculars can be tough to manage. While it is difficult, Harris managed to stay in the top ten of her graduating class all four years.
“I always make sure I know in advance what’s due and what’s coming up in my classes and extracurriculars so I’m never caught off guard for anything,” Harris said.
Harris was asked to name her biggest inspiration throughout her high school career. She answered with a former student: Alex Lyescas, her former Drum Major during her junior year.
“Alex was the Drum Major last year and she inspired a lot of what I do. She was an incredible leader and just an amazing friend over all,” Harris said.
Outside of all of her extracurriculars, Harris also has a lot of hobbies. Some of her hobbies include Scuba Diving, cooking/baking, going to the beach, and working out.
“I also recently picked up crocheting when I have the opportunity.” Harris said.
When asked about interesting facts about herself, Harris mentioned working in the summer at Camp Zephyr. Camp Zephyr is a Christian Summer Camp that takes place between May till the beginning of August each year.
“I work as a summer staffer at Camp Zephyr, I’m also a lifeguard. I’ve been to Russia once before and raise chickens and rabbits for an organization called 4H.”
After graduation, Harris plans to attend Texas A&M College Station next fall, to study mechanical engineering.
“I hope to get a degree in either mechanical or civil engineering and then get a job in that field,” Harris said.
Lydia Harris has accomplished many things throughout her highschool career, most notably being her dedication to the Flour Bluff Band all four years. While she has enjoyed all of it she stated she is ready for anything, especially to graduate!
“I’m just really excited to graduate and go to college, but I’m trying to make the best out of my senior year!”
