Lauren Gow, a second year teacher at Flour Bluff High School, currently teaches English II students and previously taught Debate at Flour Bluff High School.
“I come from a family of teachers so I have always had a high level of respect for them.” Gow said.
She has always wanted to have a career involving creativity and something that helps people, leading her to pursue teaching in college.
“I always knew I was going to major in education. I went to University of Maryland, go turps” she says “and I got my degree from there in English Language Literature and also secondary education.” Gow said.
Her experience when she first started teaching was very interesting; as she was fresh out of college teaching 10th graders, while also balancing ACT test prep with senior students relatively close to her age.
“I learned that I was in the right place job wise from that experience,” Gow said.
Her experience teaching at Flour Bluff High School is described as no less than amazing. Being new to Texas from Maryland and teaching did make her nervous at first, but after meeting everyone and the community Gow feels very lucky to be here.
“Everybody from the staff to the students has just been amazing,” Gow said. “The level of support you feel from the principals to the kids and everyone just really comes together to support each other.”
With her previous experience teaching a debate class, she took on the role to be the debate coach at Flour Bluff. With all of these opportunities, she has learned a lot about the topic and her students.
“Being honest about how much you know and showing a willingness to learn definitely helped me be a better coach and teacher.” Gow said.
Out of everything in Flour Bluff, she expresses that her debate team has definitely been her favorite part.
“I feel like as a coach I had a bit of imposter syndrome at the start, but what I learned was that they are so smart and really don’t need me,” Gow said. “It’s truly very rewarding being their coach.”
Outside of school activities, she enjoys reading, going to the beach with her dog, and just spending time with her friends when she has the chance to.
“Long walks on the beach while my dog does his zoomie laps are really my favorite thing,” Gow said.
Gow is very proud and happy with the community and friends she has gained from Flour Bluff, and hopes to have many more years to come with everyone.
