CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS—For the 2024-2025 academic year at Flour Bluff High School, a brand-new class is giving students a deeper look into the human body, and far from a typical science course. The Kinesiology class curriculum involves nutrition, physical fitness, sports medicine, and learning about why humans move the way they do.
“[These classes are] mostly Juniors and Seniors,” Mrs. Steward, the Kinesiology teacher said. “[The prerequisite courses for underclassmen to take this class is,] Exercise science, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition, [or] any of those health science classes [all work.]”
The new elective class has gained popularity because of its hands-on approach and real world connections. This class is designed for students interested in sports, fitness, and medical careers.
“We are studying the body and muscles and how they work together, [and] it’s never [a dull moment] in there,” Senior Hailey Burchell, said. “We recently built muscle bellies with play-doh and other things, and [the hands-on learning] really helps [us] learn more.”
Burchell plans to major in Kinesiology in the fall at the University of Michigan, and she recalls that the class has helped her improve her fitness techniques not only at school, but out of school.
“When it comes to lifting, I used to not be the greatest lifter. I would lift wrong, but going into depth into this class [has shown me how to lift properly and not hurt myself and tear my muscles.]” Burchell said.
Real-world professionals are also involved with teaching the students, from physical therapists to orthopedic surgeons, people with these professions and experiences have given the students more insight into future career paths.
“We are going to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi this week, and the athletic trainer is going to take us on a tour of the Kinesiology Department,” Mrs. Steward said. “I’ve [also] had five speakers come in [over the course of the year, which] is really cool.”
With the successes and performance of this year’s class and students, Mrs. Steward has big plans for the next groups of students.
“They are [adding] a Kinesiology two,” Mrs. Steward said. “[These classes] would be great for [those students] to do that next stage especially if they want to be a coach, trainer, or in the medical field.”
As the class is well-rounded, Mrs. Steward makes learning better for everyone. There are not a lot of difficult tests, and she would rather watch the kids retain their memory longer, engaging them with many activities to keep their brains running.
“If you like getting out of the classroom and really doing a lot of Hands-On activities,” Burchell said. “I would 100% take this class.”
