At the start of the 2024-2025 school year, Flour Bluff ISD welcomed Mr. Joseph Guzman as the newest member of the Hustlin’ Hornet Band staff. He brings twelve years of experience in music education, with a focus in percussion. He serves as the Assistant High School Band Director and Percussion Specialist.
“My first year of teaching at Flour Bluff ISD has been an adventure, and I am enjoying all of the students who I have met and worked with over the last few months,” Guzman said. “I have made friends with the Fine Arts Staff who were approachable and always wanted to lend a hand.”
Guzman began his education journey attending Texas A&M University-Kingsville, where he graduated with his Music Education and Music Performance Degree. He also performed in the top ensembles at the university.
“We performed at various events, including the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in front of many directors in the state of Texas.” Guzman said.
After graduation, he started teaching at Taft ISD as an assistant band director for three years before leaving to Brownsville ISD.
“I then returned to Taft ISD, where I then became the Head Band Director and took our High School Band to the TMEA State Honor Band Competition,” Guzman said. “I have helped many students achieve their goals of making the All-State Band and now have former students who are on the verge of becoming Band Directors themselves.”
After six years, Guzman has been adjusting to a new school and environment, which brought its challenges.
“A change in routine was definitely something that made me struggle at first,” Guzman said. “Anytime you work with new students, sometimes you have to make adjustments because they aren’t used to how you have been teaching previous students. Everyone learns differently and making accommodations that benefit my students is something I have learned to do over the years.”
In regards to overcoming these challenges, the students, staff, and community make it easier to navigate through.
“The parents have been supportive in every way possible,” Guzman said. “I am impressed with how much the kids love the band program and want to go above and beyond to make sure they are successful.”
Looking ahead, he has big plans for the band program at Flour Bluff. So far, he has already begun an Indoor Percussion Organization.
“My goals for the band program are to bring some of my knowledge and experiences to our students,” Guzman said. “There are some things they have not experienced before, and I would like to give them opportunities they may have not ever tried before.”
To him, collaboration with his fellow band directors and staff is a priority, and he values the support he receives from everyone at Flour Bluff ISD.
“I am constantly working with the Intermediate, Junior High, and High School Staff and Students,” Guzman said. “I enjoy coming to work every day and want to be the best version of myself to help them get to where they want to.”
