Senior Carson Pape has attended Flour Bluff since Kindergarten. Although he took a break during 5th and 6th grade because of his 4th grade accident of pulling the fire alarm, he is excited to finish schooling where he started.
In high school, Pape busied himself with his involvement with the theatre program at Flour Bluff. It has been more than just an extracurricular, but a journey of creativity, leadership, and growth. Pape has been a dedicated member of the Thespian Troupe #4053 since his sophomore year, participating in every production the group has performed in.
His theatre journey started with acting, and was cast as an alternate in his first One Act Play competition. During that season, he was promoted to the assistant director to Mrs. Samuels, the theatre sponsor.
“Our show was These Shining Lives. We made it to area for the first time in Bluff history, and the whole experience [was] the most fun I have ever had.” Pape said.
Because of his dedication after his first year, he strove to take on a larger role for the next season. He was cast as Professor Plum in their production of Clue.
“Clue was quite intensive,” Pape said. “But I do not regret a moment of it, and enjoyed myself throughout.”
In the following spring, he was cast in a smaller role, because of his performance at auditions. He felt frazzled by this, but didn’t let it get in the way.
“Mrs. Samuels came to me [during] the first rehearsal, and asked if I wanted to direct the show with her again,” Pape said. “I was overjoyed and accepted; It was a bit more work than just directing or just acting, but I managed, and we put on a fantastic show.”
Unfortunately, the group only managed to make it past zone, but he felt that the audience was fulfilled by the emotional impact the show had.
“My quite stoic father told me he cried throughout the performance.” Pape said.
His last fall season before auditions, he approached Mrs. Samuels with a request to direct Annie with her for his senior year. Without a doubt, she said yes!
“Directing was so fun, and my subordinates told me I was a good leader,” Pape said. “Directing involved having to be able to separate friendships from the stage, and give my friends criticism.”
As graduation is approaching, Pape plans to attend Texas A&M University - College Station, where he eagerly awaits his acceptance.
“Go Aggies!” he exclaimed.
Reflecting on his time at Flour Bluff, he would like to leave behind his poor work ethic, and step up as he transitions to college life.
“I [also] love how the Bluff doesn’t focus on just football, and has a large variety of extracurriculars.” Pape said.
His story is one of passion and personal growth. His contributions to the theatre program have definitely inspired his peers around him.
