CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS—On the morning of August 22nd, the Coastal Bend Blood Center brought two buses to the Flour Bluff High School Campus, giving high school students the chance to donate blood. Students who are 17 donated if they had a signed permission slip, while students aged 18 or older donated without needing one.
Senior Owen Greer chose to donate blood that Thursday. To earn his red cord, Greer began donating blood, stating, “It wasn’t scary, but it definitely was an experience.” Greer also expressed his surprise at the size of the needles, saying, “When I was on the bus, there was so much movement I could feel the needle moving around in my arm.”
Junior Johannah Plasky shared her first experience donating blood: “I donated my blood to help save people’s lives. It only took 20 minutes. At first, I was a little nervous, but with the reassurance of the nurses, I felt safe.
Our Health Science teacher, Mrs. Garcia, and some of the Health Science students worked shifts on each bus. When asked about the importance of the blood drive, Mrs. Garcia said, “Just one blood donation can save up to 3 lives in our community. The Flour Bluff High School blood drives are vital to ensure we have the needed blood products for all 22 medical facilities in our Coastal Bend community.”
When asked how students could earn a red cord without donating blood themselves, Garcia suggested they recruit five other students to donate on their behalf. “Earning a red cord for graduation is an accomplishment, and we have high hopes that everyone will earn a red cord this school year!” she added.
Hornets, if you are interested in earning a red cord, and saving lives, you can sign up to donate during one of our next Blood Drives, hosted by the Coastal Bend Community Blood Center, the next of which comes to FBHS on October 17, 2024.
