Senior Andrew Biven has been involved in many extra curricular activities throughout his high school career at Flour Bluff. Since Freshman year, he has participated in Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC), Choir, and Computer Programming.
NJROTC has allowed Biven to show off his skills in technical challenges, and showcased his commitment to teamwork on the two teams he has participated in. With Stellar Exploreers, he has worked hand-in-hand with his team to make financial and technical decisions for the challenges they faced.
"Overall, I've learned a lot of things I never knew before from this team and it has helped me learn to be more vocal about what I see that needs to be changed," said Biven.
Meanwhile as a part of the Academics team, his knowledge of history, Naval procedure, and even political positions helped bring the team to victory multiple times in the two years he participated.
"I've always enjoyed history and procedures, but this gave me an outlet to focus it on," said Biven.
His recent adoption of the CyberPatiot team will give him yet another opportunity to shine with the Flour Bluff NJROTC program.
Biven remarked, "I wasn't sure if I would get to be on the team this year, it wasn't available last year and I'm glad to be a part of it again."
In Choir, Biven currently stands out as a Bass One. In Spring of 2023, he competed as a Tenor Two at the Regional Choir competition, where he was able to secure 7th chair.
"Of all the things in my life, Choir is one that will always matter the most," said Biven.
Outside of choir and extracurricular activities, Biven enjoys playing Dungeon and Dragons (D&D) with his friends. In addition to his love for computer programming, he codes in his free time for items in his D&D campaign, and continues to explore new projects and deepen his knowledge of computer science.
"I'm running my own campaign now, and with my understanding of coding, I'm able to make a more immersive digital D&D campaign for my group," said Biven.
Biven has been actively learning about computer programming for 4 years, after learning a lot of interesting tricks from friends in his D&D group.
Biven is also an avid fan of Star Wars. His room theme is based on the series. In his down time, he engages in cosplays, a form of dressing up and acting out a character, as his favorite characters.
"I've cosplayed as many different characters in ther Star Wars world, from Corpus Christi Comicon to the 5K run for the school even," said Biven.
In the first annual Star Wars 5K run put on by our Flour Bluff Community boosters, he used his love of cosplay to compete in their costume competition, winning 1st place for his cosplay of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the franchise.
Looking ahead, Biven plans on attending Del Mar College in the fall before transferring to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC). He plans to major in Computer Science.
Biven sums up his experience at Flour Bluff saying, “High school has definitely been an interesting experience.”
Biven’s commitment to his interests and determined mindset have set a remarkable example for his fellow classmates.
