Eilish Brazell is a Freshman English teacher at Flour Bluff High School. Brazell is a fourth year teacher and this is her first year in the district.
“I like to see students grow throughout the year and kind of find who they are and what they like to do,” Brazell said.
In Brazell’s class, Students learn how to efficiently comprehend written words and also testing strategies for your EOC. While all of these things are necessary, Brazell’s favorite thing to teach is Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
“I like to see the student engagement,” Brazell said. “This is usually around the time where I see students grow most. So it's fun, the drama of it, and I like the critiques y’all give.”
Not only has Brazell made an impact on her students, she has also befriended several other teachers in the English department. Mary Catherine Page and Taylor Billings are predominantly the teachers she spends time with outside of work. Brazell also likes to indulge in hobbies aside from her profession. This list includes thrifting, taking walks, and, of course, reading.
“I really like to read. I really like to go to the library, visit the librarian, and see new books.” Brazell said.
Though now she works for FBISD, Brazell graduated while still in Corpus Christi at Veterans Memorial, as one of its first classes.
“I like the way Flour Bluff approaches academics and holding students accountable.” Brazell said.
Brazell graduated from University of North Texas with a double major in English and social sciences. She prefers reading and writing heavy subjects, so if she didn’t teach English, she’d teach the closest related subjects.
“I would probably teach some kind of social studies.” Brazell said.
Before teaching here, Brazell was at King High School teaching English I and last year English II. She appreciates the freedom of teachers Flour bluff allows and enjoys helping younger students kick start their high school years.
“I actually really like freshman, I think that it's fun to see yall start out, the way that you start out, and then you grow and become more mature throughout the year,” Brazell said.
Brazell is excited about the rest of the school year and thinks the first half has gone by smoothly. She says her favorite book her students have read thus far is To Kill a Mockingbird.
“To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book, so the advanced students will read that,” Brazell said
