CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS—On December 9, 2024 at The Art Museum of South Texas a christmas tree made by our very own Flour Bluff National Art Honor Society was displayed. The tree wasn’t just a normal christmas tree made for the festivities of the winter holiday.
The tree was based on a Polish children's story book called “The Hundred Dresses”. The book told a story about a young girl that was bullied because she wore the same dress to school everyday. The young girl then comes up with her own story, imagining she has one hundred dresses.
The Flour Bluff National Art Honor Society then creates a christmas tree inspired by the encouraging story. The tree featured hand crafted dresses as ornaments to decorate the tree. The tree skirt was then a desk inspired by where the young girl sketched her ideas.
Approximately, 17 students worked on the tree itself. High School Senior Ike Holland contributed to the dress ornaments on the tree. He stated the construction of the tree took a little under a week to finish. “We designed very small scale dresses, almost like doll dresses. I helped pick out fabric and the overall design on each dress.”
Another student that helped assemble the tree was High School Senior Mya Craney. Craney stated her experience with the environment while building the tree. “I think the experience was really fun, I enjoyed making tiny dresses with my friends and bringing recognition to such a great story.”
While the tree was made for the enjoyment of others it also was a symbol. The book is a symbol of good character and shows children to not make fun of others. The tree was displayed at The Art Museum of South Texas, soon entered into a contest between other story book trees. Voting for the tree takes place between November 25th to December 18th.
