2018

In 2018 the Fighting Machinists went up against Union Busting Legislation; The Fighting Machinists visited the offices of every member of the House and most of the Senate prior to the house vote on this damaging bill.

January 2018: House Bill 25 a union busting bill that threatened to wipe out Florida public unions and silence the voices of our states teachers, nurses, bus drivers, and many other public servants from negotiating for fair wages and working conditions. It placed new barriers and hurdles on the ability of unions to represent their workers, and collective bargaining on behalf of all workers.

The House passed HB-25 on January 25; See How Your Rep Voted: HB-25 Vote Tally

In February 2018, subsequent to the HB-25 vote, the bill was rolled into a 200 page omnibus education bill HB 7055. Hidden in this legislation is similar union-busting decertification language from HB-25 that House leadership rammed through the process the prior week.

HB 7055 has a more direct attack on Florida’s teachers, specifically stripping our state’s educators and staff from having a voice on the job. HB 7055 also tells children who are bullied to leave their school and go somewhere else, and seeks to further expand the unaccountable for-profit charter school industry in Florida, diverting hundreds of millions of tax dollars to private, for-profit schools, reduces accountability for student performance, and hurts programs for struggling students.

Fighting machinists opposed HB 7055 with phone calls and emails to State Senate members.

HB 7055 passed the Senate March 5, 2018. See How Your State House reps voted on Union Busting:
