Our 4th graders are in a study of the Earth and it's makeup. This includes:
layers of the Earth
rock types (sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous)
the rock cycle
rapid changes to the surface of the Earth - earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes
slow changes to the surface of the Earth - weathering, erosion, and deposition
Earth's Resources (renewable, non-renewable, water cycle, fossil fuels, layers of soil, recycling)
Following our Earth Science unit, we will begin our first AMSTI kit. 4th graders will look closer at the makeup of the earth. This will include:
observing soils and the weathering of rocks
stream-table systems
landforms (plateau, mountain, plain, valley, canyon, delta)
studying volcanic mountains using models, topographic maps, and photographs
rock layers and rocks as they are related to history of a place
weathering, erosion, deposition
🧑🔬 This unit will have hands-on learning opportunities such as:
Students will be able to observe different types of soil
Students will build stream-tables with sand and water to stimulate the effects of weathering and erosion
Students will be able to observe and manipulate a 3D topographic map and its contour lines
Students will create a plan for an erosion control barrier and work within a budget
