In Fleming County Schools, students engage in three Next-Level Writing assessments each year, designed to measure growth and mastery in meaningful, real-world contexts. These Next-Level Writing benchmarks empower students through carefully crafted writing tasks selected to connect with students' interests, aspirations, and real-life experiences.
Beyond these assessments, daily writing across all subject areas is essential to the district’s commitment to building strong writers. Students routinely engage in various writing activities, including short or extended responses, journaling, creative storytelling, informational reporting, and technical writing tied directly to authentic, real-world scenarios. Through this approach, Fleming County Schools ensures students continuously develop their ability to communicate clearly, think critically, and creatively address challenges they may encounter in the world beyond school.
Students in grades K-11 participate in growth assessments using i-Ready diagnostics in reading and math. These research-based, adaptive assessments precisely identify each student's current skills and abilities, enabling students to clearly demonstrate their strengths and areas for growth. The assessments are administered three times per year: early September, again in December or January, and finally in April or May. Fleming County Schools places a strong emphasis on measuring and celebrating student growth from fall to spring. By intentionally focusing on growth, both directly and indirectly, we have successfully shifted the learning narrative, empowering students to understand the value and importance of adopting a growth mindset throughout their educational journey.
Students in grades 3-8 participate in Through-Course Assessments (TCAs), which feature criterion-referenced, peer-reviewed questions aligned with grade-level standards in reading and math. For the 2024-2025 school year, Fleming County Schools has partnered with i-Ready to develop concise, state-like assessments administered twice annually—once in the fall and again in early spring.
These assessments closely mirror state-required testing protocols used during end-of-year standardized assessments. Developed securely by an i-Ready assessment team, the TCAs remain confidential until the scheduled day of administration, ensuring test integrity. Faculty and staff do not have access to assessment items before test day, supporting fair, consistent, and reliable evaluation of each student's mastery of essential skills and standards.
