Students in VEX IQ are in 4th through 7th grade. These robots are made of plastic and snap together like Legos. The engineering is a bit easier because this allows quick changes and redesigns. The robots are programmed in a software called RobotC and programs can be driver controlled or autonomous. Competitions are teamwork challenges: two robots cooperate for the highest scores while two drivers from each team operate the robot. The teams also compete in Skills challenges where they score as many points as possible with their own robot. Skills matches can be driver controlled or autonomous.
Students in VEX EDR are in 7th and 8th grade. The robots are made of metal and have to be bolted together. This advanced engineering requires more time to make adjustments. The new V5 robots use VEX C++ while the earlier versions still use RobotC. Competitions are teamworks challenges but involve four teams. Two robots are on the red alliance and two robots are on the blue alliance in a given match. The highests scoring alliance wins the match.
