Troy's four year plan for students following the Cyber Defense pathway:

  • 9th grade: AP Computer Science Principles
  • 10th grade: Computer Operating Systems Security (Honors)
  • 11th grade: Cyber Security Fundamentals (Honors)
  • 12th grade: Network Security Fundamentals (Honors)

AP Computer Science Principles Course Description: From the College Board: AP Computer Science Principles offers a multidisciplinary approach to teaching the underlying principles of computation. The course will introduce students to the creative aspects of programming, abstractions, algorithms, large data sets, the Internet, cybersecurity concerns, and computing impacts. AP Computer Science Principles will give students the opportunity to use technology to address real-world problems and build relevant solutions. Together, these aspects of the course make up a rigorous and rich curriculum that aims to broaden participation in computer science.

Computer Operating System Security Honors (2017/18 school year) Course Description: Computer Operating System Security Honors is designed to give the student an understanding of operating system of personal computers, personal computer security, and personal security on individual computers and on the Internet. The course will cover the fundamentals of the graphical user interface, mouse operations, how to manipulate the interface, how to use help, search, launch applications, manage files and folders and add/delete hardware and software. Additional topics include and using anti-virus software, how virus programs infect computers, and how to protect computers from malicious programs. Students will also learn how to protect their own computers from viruses, Trojan Horse programs, and other intrusive software. Students will also learn to protect their personal information on the Internet and how to securely send information.

Cyber Security Fundamentals Honors (2018/19 school year) Course Description: Cyber Security Fundamentals Honors is designed to give the student an understanding of the basic concepts behind computer security, evidential process, and handling electronic evidence, including securing and analyzing a computer system, securing and analyzing a network system, working with law enforcement, and information warfare. Students will also learn the Perl scripting language, basic Perl syntax, data types, functions, and using Perl with files and databases and how to use Perl with HTML files.

Network Security Fundamentals Honors (2018/19 school year) Course Description: Network Security Fundamentals Honors is designed to give the student an understanding of data communications, business networking concepts, network security, and covers terminology, technology, and software used with network security. Students will learn about communication security, infrastructure security, cryptography and business plans for disaster recovery. Topics include the major components of a data communications network, local area networks, wide area networks, networking topologies, network protocols, internetworking, and categorizing network operating systems.
