Abstract: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning indoor spaces consumes significant energy. Households in Massachusetts require anywhere from $1000 to $3500 per annum to heat their homes.

Many heating systems rely on microprocessor activated thermoelectric switches that maintain a set temperature. The simplest form of temperature control would consist of turning on a heater when it gets too cold and turning it off when the temperature exceeds the set point.

The work presented explores the effect of varying this “comfort zone” on energy consumption when heating a room of specified dimensions that has windows and walls through which heat loss occurs through conduction.
