Devin Tormey Art: A Comprehensive Business Plan

Devin Tormey

Abstract:
What separates someone who makes art as a hobby and someone who makes art for a living? In an industry where business is never guaranteed, and steady income relies solely on work ethic, successful full-time artists are few and far between. I have been creating art in various media for 21 years, and for the last 4, I have been attempting to establish a small business selling my work. While there was little success along the way, I recognized there was ample room for improvement, then this business plan was born. So, what is the key to making it as a professional artist? Researching the established professionals in the industry, highlighting personal business goals, formulating steps to achieve those objectives, and remaining dedicated to the artistic process. These steps and more are broken down in this business plan, which acts as a guide to making it as a professional, self-sustaining artist. I plan on utilizing my research and implementing it into my business practice to amplify my fine art business. In this thesis you will also find a creative component which accompanies the research. I was given the opportunity to employ my creative skills through two murals for a local middle school; the process and research which went into this project are also included within the writing.
