How can the sense of community and belonging improve classrooms?

Abstract:
The intention of this presentation is to explore the ways in which students are impacted when it comes to their sense of community and belonging; as well as what we can do as educators to aid in making an inclusive environment. Massachusetts schools tend to contain a very large portion of students who belong to the Hispanic or Latin communities. According to studies, nearly 56% of students on average identify with these communities. Students who are part of this community often experience trouble fitting in and finding a sense of community. When students are dealing with balancing two cultures, along with the negativity these issues bring about, it can take quite a toll on their academics and their mental health. As new educators adapt to teaching, the need to promote a sense of community and belonging in the classroom are two of the key concepts needed to maintain a positive environment for students. Exploring the ways in which educators can implement the importance of diversity and inclusion in a classroom is important. In continuing to review our classroom management strategies, we are allowing students to feel accepted. Using an example from a Content Area Reading Project, my goal is that educators and students can connect different themes of a book to their own life experiences and learn from each other.
